separate volumes

I have a wd 3 giga standard sata drive that was previously divided into 2 volumes. Years later, I erased the data and volumes in a desire to create a new, single logical ntfs volume across the entire disk. After deleting everything the disk still is "read" as having 2 separate areas that cannot be joined into a single unallocated area. How did this happen? How can I invalidate this condition and return the disk to it's original configuration? I should mention that I have inserted the disk into different pc's with different os's with the same result.

Thank you!
