I would not risk anything like that if the data is important...

Yeah, I'm done with the on/off method. I really just wanted to get some sectors copied so i can confirm the data is actually there. So I'm satisfied that it is.

I am absolutely open to hear some quotes. It sounds like a pretty simple recovery, assuming a a proper loader is available.

As i mentioned i can jump around the drive with hdparm and read sectors anywhere, until this "pending bug" locks me up, so i am hopeful that there is not surface or head damage.

I have been trying to find a firmware update for the OP's SATA model, but all I found was the 3.07 update for the PATA version. In any case this update appears to incorporate a CERT component.

It appears I was wrong. The update contains only the ATA overlay, App Code (M72) and ROM.

The -f option in Seagate's Firmware Upgrade Utility appears to be able to update .crt and .tbl modules individually.

Code:
Seagate Firmware Upgrade Utility v4.29PH
Copyright 2000-2006 Seagate Technology LLC, All Rights Reserved

Usage: hfus429.exe -<target> <datafile> -m <name> [options]
-<target>   pm, ps, sm, ss (pm = primary master, etc..)
-m <name>   Specify the model family to flash.
       -c          Send a congen file.
-r          Include the serial flash file when flashing.
-s          Only send a single file, fully specified by -f.
-v          Toggles verbose mode on/off.  Default is off.
-l          List supported family names and models.
-b          Segmented download of DLDxx.BIN files or the -f <file> if specified.
-f <file>   Specify the filename prefix of the flash files.
This defaults to 'seaflash' if not provided.  Filename
extensions '.fls', '.ovl', '.crt', and '.tbl' are assumed.
