Like just about everything else in the world, not all Seagate product lines are junk. The low end cheap models are. Seagate makes them with cheap components, so people can afford them.

Whoever does not want junk, then should buy something expensive, as, statistically, quality will be better.

Which of Seagate's product lines are not built with cheap components, and how can the end user recognise the difference?

The following serial number prefixes would suggest that there are no head/media differences between the respective consumer and enterprise grade models. Has anything changed today?

7200.11
-------
ST3500320AS --- 5QM 6QM 9QM
ST3750330AS --- 3QK 5QK 9QK
ST31000340AS --- 5QJ 6QJ 9QJ

ES.2
----
ST3500320NS --- 5QM 9QM
ST3750330NS --- 3QK 9QK
ST31000340NS --- 9QJ

ES.2 SAS

ST31000640SS --- 9QJ

Off the top of my head: by model line (e.g. enterprise vs entry level), by understanding the technology and intended use (e.g. NAND quality ranking, green economy technology vs server 24/7), trusted reviews, etc.
There is a quality classification in just about everything.
The simplest way to recognize is by price. There is a reason why there are various prices.

What is the reason that external drives often (usually?) cost a lot less than the exact same internal drives?

Don't endorse it, but it is simply a method of leveraging perception (based on lack of awareness) to maximize sales. If people are stupid through laziness and likeness in living misinformed and believe everything at face value, then hey, these guys capitalize on it. There is always a sucker out there. Solution: "Stop being stupid!", by Dick Gregory, RIP.

There are additional components and design tweaks to those of heads and media that could make a significant difference.

Needless to say, I don't believe a manufacturer, nor any business, can possibly test a model drive in all possible aspects m/billions of different users can test cumulatively. Hence, there is a lot of simulation and so on.

Interesting read, thanks. However I get the impression that, aside from firmware, much of the differences are of a select-on-test nature. That is, many of the components are essentially identical, with the better performing ones being diverted to the enterprise market.

They're so poor, they can't afford punctuation or Shift keys.
