I got a Seagate Desktop HDD that isn't being recognized by the BIOS. When you boot with the HDD plugged in, it's throwing a BIOS POST error. A friend gave me the HDD to see if I could recover the data, however, because I can't see the HDD in BIOS, I can't use my usual tools like fDisk to pull the data. It had a Windows 10 OS on it. I was told that the HDD was working one day, then it would stop, then the next day it would work, etc.

I know in BIOS, the HDD isn't recognized. The drive isn't making any noises. It is spinning and I can feel the vibrations. My suspensions is likely an issue with the PCB where the computer can't read the data from the disk. Or something with firmware. I just don't know where to look next. The farthest I ever went with data recovery is open up software and type in the command to copy the data from a bad HDD to a new HDD.

On these drives, it’s usually a firmware issue (I.e. corrupt/damaged modules) or quite often one of the heads fails/weakens.

I don’t recall EVER it being a PCB issue with these symptoms.

It’s not really something you can safely DIY unfortunately, you’ll need proper tool and also know what you’re doing with them.

Sorry it’s not what you want to hear, but it is what it is :-(

Yeah, almost certainly isn't a PCB issue. This is a Grenada family drive. The 3Tb version of this same drive had such high failure rate that they're being class-action sued over it.

Most cases the issue relates to a firmware bug in the media cache or bad sector reallocation functions going haywire as soon as the drive develops bad sectors or gets a weak head. We see them here all the time and most are Tier 1 cases which we charge $450 flat rate for (for no rush service priority) here in Providence, RI. In some other countries, they do it for even less.
