In the early days, when track pitch was low, drives had a dedicated non-data servo surface for headstack positioning. Data was stored on separate read/write surfaces. Each R/W head/surface had to be aligned to this servo surface, ie the servo surface was the reference. When the controller commanded a seek to a particular cylinder and sector, it was the dedicated servo head which positioned the headstack. Nowadays there is no servo head. Instead, each surface incorporates servo information within each track. My contention is that there should be no need for alignment, at least not in the sense that I understand it.

I completely agree with you! For example i extract 2 platter from damaged hdd and put inside donor one and i respect 1st platter and 2nd vetically without rotating faces! But if i rotate the 2nd one about 180 degrees respect the 1st horizontally (or value that you want) what this rotation will cause?? a misalignment or nothing ? maybe just an increase of seek time right ??

@XAN, let me just clarify my position. I accept that rotating the platters results in some kind of misalignment, but I don't understand why. Like you, I would expect that there would be an increase in head skew when switching between platters. However, ISTM that this should simply result in a very minor performance hit, not a dead drive.

The only other possibilities that come to mind are runout and imbalance. However, I would think that these effects would be present even if rotational alignment were maintained.

Thank You very much for answer me ! You are clearify point in my situation ! And I want to suppose now another case.. crazy case ok ?

For example 2 platter hdd and the same model is the donor (donor is LLF)
I take the 1st (or the 2nd) platter from damaged one and place in to the 1st (or 2nd) donor hdd should i be able to extract some of data ? Should i consider theorically that if the data is fragmented there is low possibility to extract it instead of defragmented one ?

The best way to know is to experiment with damage free working/test drives. This way experiments are conclusive (at least expected to be). With damaged drives/platters, one will run in circles of assumption and confusion.

Of Course sometimes it's better to have some experiment with free fail hardware! Going Back to my problem on recovery data on Hitachi 500gb hdd after 20 days of work hdd heads are gone again!
Waiting for a new donor again! :|

i just imagine i have so many dust on my platters... what can i use to clean platters ? some alcholic solution ? or ?

I use compressed nitrogen. If You have a lot of dust maybe You have scrached platters

Compressed nitrogen? mmm.... i'm looking for somethings different but it will be a solution.. if you say!

Anyway with last set of heads hdd become reconized by the BIOS and OS, i worked with R-Studio but after 200 mb of data the remaining time grow about 17 years for complete the operation (and grow and grow day by day..) i noticed that i had thousand of CRC error on each sector so i try to scan other region of hdd but i had the same results after some Mb of data recovered i had again CRC errors. Finally i reopen to so see platters damage... nothing seems to be bad but i when i restart recovery operations after 2 days hdd start clicking... and become unreconized again :roll: :?

Be careful not to freeze the plates. It just has to blow out the dust. Why r-studio. After replacing the heads, you should do the image on short times, skipping Bad Sectors, and then open te image with r-studio for analysis.

Well, if the surface has not died yet from reading it with R-Studio, after you get new heads, just make a clone of the drive ( with hddsuperclone for example, if you do not have a hardware based imager ) .
Then run tools like RStudio and others in the clone, not in the patient drive.

Yeah i will keep you updated with a new set of heads on my hands.. but i suppose dust will block my heads.. for now thank's you all!! mm i will ask in these days for other tips!
