Hi Guys,

I have an external hard drive with really important data on I cant afford to lose.

By accident I put in the wrong cable to power it up to my laptop. The second I smelt burning I unplugged it. The cable I used was too high in voltage.

The hard drive will not spin up and makes no noise and isn't viewable when plugged into my laptop at all.

So, I read that it was probably the PCB board so I ordered the exact male and model as the one I got and unscrewed the old one and put the new on one.

Plugged it into my laptop and still nothing. Not even a slight spin!!

I'm not at a loss of how I can retrieve the images off this drive !!

OK - This is the new one, but where the screwdriver is, that was the part that appeared to be burnt out.

The other side looked normal

I will try and find it now.

You will have to ignore the burnt area now as someone tried to solder on a new iodine part or something, which didnt go well.

Which PCB did you replace?

The one attached to the actual drive or the USB one?

(I’m assuming it’s a regular SATA drive in a USB casing?)

@Liquidic3, the drive should have spun up with the new PCB, albeit without access to your data. Therefore ISTM that your USB-SATA bridge PCB may be damaged as well. Can you upload a photo of the bridge PCB?

Yeah, it's just an external drive with USB connection so as I have taken it out the case I just used a simple sata to usb cable and plugged into the laptop.

The one attached to the drive now is the new replacement.

Sorry my technical knowledge is a little limited. Which part is the bridge PCB?

Does the new "simple sata to usb cable" come with its own power supply? Your HDD cannot be powered from the USB port alone.

That device only provides +5V power and is intended for 2.5" HDDs. You need a 3.5" device which provides both +5V and +12V.

Ahh - I feel so stupid.

I will go today and buy a new power supply.

The only problem is, I still wont be able to access the data right until I take the bios from the old one and put it on the new one ?>

So, I had some chap do the soldering for me.

He had my HDD on a recovery program which showed everything coming back up which was great, although he charges a fortune compared to some others so I said i'd leave it and take it back home to run it with my own program, incidentally I run the same program he did in his shop!

Anyways, now it wont work, I'm so cheesed off I should have just paid him.

Hard drive spins up for about 5 seconds then automatically shuts down on its own.

ARGHGHGH!!!!

Ok, don't know why but its working again.

I was in the middle of scanning for files to recover and it found 26,000 but half way through the scan the HDD went off again so it didn't complete.

In my computer management console it says I have:


D: 232GB RAW
D: 1630.14 Unallocated

I will re-try the scan and see where I get. At least the files are still there, it's just a question of getting them off.

EDIT - Just tried the recovery program again. It finds my image files which is the most important part I need, so I stop the scan and it says building intelligent new directory please wait, but it just hangs and the HDD disappears from My Computer, and the computer management as though it no longer exists.

So just a quick update.

The other docking station I was using kept cutting out the Hard Drive all the time, whenever I tried to access anything, it would freeze.

So I have changed docking stations, now this one just says USB No Media. No idea why it says this now. Maybe this docking station isn't providing enough power?

Anyways, I have just ordered my 3rd station, this time an enclosed external hard drive one. Hoping to have more success with that.

Failing that one, I'm taking it to a pro lol.

You do realise that unless you’ve transferred the ROM chip from the old board tomth new one, the drive will never work like this in a million years?

Unless I’m missing something, you’ve simply switched the PCB for one from the same type of drive? These PCB’s have absolutely 100% UNIQUE information in the ROM chip for each and every drive.

We can almost certainly sort this out for you for a reasonable fee

The simple solution should have been to snip the shorted 12V TVS diode and attach your drive directly to a SATA port on your computer's motherboard.
