Ok ... The drive is TOASTED !!!

I did the Full Format with P-List and it ended up with error. When checking again the drive now is full of bad sectors. Same as with Format with P + G. I did restore the translator from backup but the user space is full of bad blocks. Time for testing and playing with the drive !!!

Interesting !!! I can't REMAP on this drive !!!! I can't place sectors on the G-List by erasing/Re-Maping using Victoria or even HDD/HRT !!!

The drive is not REMAPING at all by itself ....

Let's try with firmware tool.

Drive is really messed up.

I can WRITE to all sectors but when the drive writes to BAD sectors it will write fine and will not report any error. When reading the data on those damaged sectors will be currupted and verify will report error but sectors are NOT added to the G-List. I did try full erase, zero fill, even using HRT option to write random pattern, etc ... all sectors write ok with exception of bad ones that are not re-mapped. Tested with Victoria with Remap on and write on, etc .... nothing apears to re-map the sectors. So .... I did tought about Self-Scan but HDD.exe doesn't have SS option for those "old" generations of WDC MCU based. For MCU based on WDC (Not MARVELL) HDD48.exe allows to Self Scan but only on x_A, and x_B models !!!

I did test the x_A utility because some commands like the super format, etc are the same but ..... it doesn't work !!!

Looks like it requires some modules that my drive doesn't have like C4 and C5. I can make the script by HRT but it won't work on this "older" drive.

Also i do have a start command fo SS "old" drives but doesn't do a thing on my drive ...

I will try to edit modules ..... I will try to change the drive ID from the correct model to something like Spildit.

I don't think so .....

If i do a read on SA tracks i only start to get errors at :

Read error on Cyl=-1, h=all, s=151 -

Also there are data up untill SPT 128 - offset FFF0

Oops, I confused myself. AISI, the "BAD" stuff begins at offset 0x12C00, so the SPT for the SA is 0x12C00 / 0x200 = 0x96 (150).

Is there any chance you could add hires photos/scans of the PCB to your HDD Oracle database? I'm curious to see how your WD MCU differs from later ones.

Is there any chance you could add hires photos/scans of the PCB to your HDD Oracle database? I'm curious to see how your WD MCU differs from later ones.

Yes. I will take a photo and post later. No problem !

FWIW, some old Seagate models allow the user to enable/disable "all automatic defect assignment" via the Set Features EFh (04h/84h) command.

Old HRT prototype HDD.exe does have many options that were removed from retail HRT product. Not only HRT doesn't support those old WD (that HDD.exe supports) but also ALL Self-Scan options were removed from retail HRT while they are present on the prototype.

I did find a interesting option on the HRT prototype as well :

Old WD ZONE issuer. If one uses the "Issue HDD" option it somehow "brite forces" the zones and SPT ... It takes a minute or so while it's filling the zone table so it's somehow re-creating it by reading drive.

Firmware have cyl -1 to -5 (starts at -5) and SPT of 150.

Yesterday i did discover the SPT for Zone 1 (User area first track) by brute force and discover the same value - 171. I did this by "hand this way :

Service - I/O Operations :
Physical READ with HEAD 0
Track 0 to Track 0
SPT for example - 200

One would start to get errors at sector 172 so sector 171 is the last one that can be read for that track :

It reads the entire track consecutively without switching heads so LBA 0 to 170 goes on the same track and does make the 171 SPT for each track at the start of the drive - first user area zone.

Can you upload your zone table? I think I may have misidentified it in a previous post.

BTW, I have analysed the bad sectors in your previous screen shot.

Code:
LBA      diff    track count + skew?
-----   ------   -------------------
23611   + 2011 = (11 x 171) + 130
25622   +  130 =            + 130
25752   + 1840 = (10 x 171) + 130
27592   +  130 =            + 130
27722   + 2011 = (11 x 171) + 130
29733   +  130 =            + 130
29863   + 1840 = (10 x 171) + 130
31703

I'm not sure what to make of it.
