ISA Had no self scan for pre AA/BB.Even with your stolen HDD48 you cannot use it to start SS on that WD, there is no push button start SS.

I say stolen because it was never knowing released outside of the team

Thanks for the extra info. I do have a bunch of VSC that should work on those drives - prior to AA/BB but the start SS VSC (for those drives) doesn't do anything. I can use Super ON and then some Super Format VSC and also some FW reading VSC commands on those (prior to AA/BB. Super On is completly different from AA/BB super on. Super Format is the same but AA/BB support more "options" / TYPE (on Cyl field of task register).

I don't think that the drive would "survive" the Self-Scan anyway.

And yes, HDD48 allow Self-Scan on AA and BB .... The option is not present on "older" models....

From memory you have to re-populate the selfscan script. I haven’t SS those for many MANY years :)

Interesting .... Maybe i should check that later.

The interesting thing is that the drive somehow figured out it was not in good shape and lock access to user space up untill Super ON is issued. Just like modern WD drives will not load translator if heads are bad, preventing data access. The cool thing is that on those very old drives sending the "Super ON" will allow access to data once again....

So i guess i would need to "generate" a proper SS script, write it to the correct place and then issue the start SS command ...

I think the drive will be like this ... - :rip: :rip: :rip:

I might start by trying that first. Maybe i should attempt to Self-Scan one of my old Quantum drives and see if i can manage to do so.

HDD48.exe should be able to SS "Old" and "New" Quantums and i also have the Vendor Specific Command to start SS on those ...

I will have to check that out later today ...

Ok ....

Now I don't have a clue about what i should do with this ... :? :? :?

Maybe "Write" and the SSMode ? Or should i "edit" something ? Or "implement" something first ?

:? :? :?

The Quantum AS Fireball is in quite good shape - no bad sectors and no slow sectors and there aren't entries on the G-List so i don't want to mess with this ....

But if there are something that i can learn form this to use on the WD drive it would be nice ....

I don't mind to kill the WD but i don't want to ruin a good Quantum as i might need it later for testing and playing with it's firmware ....
