Working on a st2000dm001-1ch164 (hp33).

I know these things are complete garbage so I'm not super hopeful.

Anyway, using Ubuntu Linux. If i watch in Dmesg it will ComReset a few times then detect as sdc as well as detecting partitions sdc1,sdc2, etc. So it is reading the partition table, thus i believe reading ROM and SA.

As soon as i begin to copy it with DDrescue it will show a bunch i/o errors and then shows an i/o error for every sector it attempts to read, thus the output disk remains empty.

Have tried reading backwards to see if its something early tripping it up, no luck.

Have not plugged in UART yet, but intend to.

Cannot read smart either

My understanding is there tends to be firmware issues with these as well as frequent head failures.

Any thoughts on what i am looking at here?

Was randomly able to get a SMART reading.

Many read errors

Was also able to copy the first 1MB before the i/o errors. Seems to be the primary GPT table.

If the drive were to be mine i would :

- Start by backing up ALL SYSFile and Modules by ATA or Terminal.
- Patch sysfile 93 to disable re-location, media cache, background scan, etc ...
- Do a quick verify "scan" on the start, middle and end of the drive to see if you have access to user space /LBA. If so :
- Attempt to clone/image by heads with hardware based imaging tool and check if it's possible to do so.
- Or .... Attempt to clone/image just the space containing the files you want to recover. You need something like PC-3000 DE, HRT-DRE, etc ...

- If you can't gain access to the totality of user space you can try to check other possible issues like media cache problems, DOS table, etc .... Check terminal error messages.

- Also the drive might have dying heads and surface damage ...

As always you should send the drive to a proper data recovery firm and let them handle the problem for you !

Regards.

Maybe head(s) are gone and only work when they want for a short time and then ... read errors.

Reading multiple times S.M.A.R.T. makes that "sometimes" the heads can read but the majority of times they won't read so you only get results sometimes.

If data is needed stop playing with the drive yourself and send it to a reputable data recovery firm. You are risking to kill the heads for good and damage the surface of the platter making recovery ... IMPOSSIBLE !!! So stop while there is still time ...
