ST5000DM000 Acting Weird

I have a strange issue with an F3. Usual goes BSY issue with any SATA commands but...

- Terminal gives a readout (see below) but cannot get terminal access either by keyboard or shorting.
- Funny thing is if the drive goes BSY, you need to repower the drive 3 times before the drive will spin again.
- Changed PCB but same issue.
- Does have 'RECOV Servo Op=0100 Resp=0005' once at start so could be a head issue.
- Might the issue with having to power on the drive 3 times for it to spin mean a ROM or Preamp issue?

i find this very unusual indeed " - Funny thing is if the drive goes BSY, you need to repower the drive 3 times before the drive will spin again. " .Could there be a possible spindle motor getting hard to rotate and failing slowly .Might be .Drive with resp-0005 error sometimes clone 100% in my experience while working with seagates .Can you take this to your clean room and try rotating the platters and see if indeed its a failing motor if spin is not that free

True but this should not make the drive behave like this " - Funny thing is if the drive goes BSY, you need to repower the drive 3 times before the drive will spin again. " . And i am hoping sean sir this drive also works with media cache at level c just like rosewood or its mostly older conventional way .Till today i have come across only two drives of this model and i was able to get the customers data .The first one was a failing drive and the second one had a bad pcb only .

Cant get access to the ROM either. This is why I initially changed the board. Shorting the ROM still gives no access. Its a strange one.

i am not sure it is true in his case might be due to the weight on the spindle motor due to many platters one in a hundred chance its a failing spindle motor .Do you have another drive ddrecovery for this drive model also .If yes i will give a shot at opening both the drives and spinning platters to get the feel of rotation

Yes this is correct. Tried shorting both sides of the ROM at almost every speed. Errors out every time.

In That Case Please Upload The ROM Dump using a external programmer and ask frank for help ,Frank is good with finding segments and there checksums .Might be there is a little rom issue somewhere and pinup type issues do come up if rom is having a small issue to not only spindle motor thats failing imho

Is there any terminal output in the no-spin situation?

None at all. In PC3000 the power lights come on and the status light remains BSY with no terminal output at all.

ISTM that would suggest that one or more of the MCU's supply voltages is not powering up. Can you measure any voltage at the jumper pins when this happens?

I saw that, but it's not clear whether the "same issue" is referring to the corrupt media cache or the no-spin problem, or both.

Hey, both issues are actually were there after the board swap (media cache and not spinning). However I have made some progress. After Franc asked me to see if these was any terminal output when the drive does not spin, I tested it and left the drive live but still in a BSY state. I came back to it about 15 mins later, shut down and restarted the drive and I suddenly got terminal access. I will let you know how I get on. And thanks.

I was able to get a copy of the critical sysfiles. Did the usual stuff like change sysfile 93 etc. I was not able to clear the DOS table or restart the media cache, maybe due to the 'issues' or the Crawford firmware. I was however able to reformat the user area which does also clear the media cache on this drive. We now have 100% LBA access and she is imaging like a WD
