What's going on with my HDD?

January 19th, 2018, 23:41

Hi, folks,

Hopefully some people here can help out a noob like me sort through my HDD issue. I plugged in my portable 750gb drive one day a few weeks ago to find it making some obscure sounds as per the video below (pardon the mic issue with the audio fading out towards the end, but you can still hear the sound that the drive makes).

Not sure what's going on, but if I had to guess I'd say a spindle is stuck on the platter? I'm worried data recovery on a drive like this is going to run into the hundreds if not over a thousand dollars, but the data on it needs to be recovered. Anyone here have any ideas what exactly is going on with it and what my recovery options are? I don't need the drive back but do need the data recovered. What would be the most cost-effective way of restoring the data if it's even possible?

Cheers, and thanks in advance!
Evan

Shouldn't be expensive at this stage, if it's not tampered with.

Try Luke at "Recovery Force" in Canada (user "lcoughey" on this forum)

Wow - thanks so much for all the speedy and helpful replies! You guys are fantastic and saved me a lot of trouble.

I will contact Luke and try to get the HDD out ASAP. I'm in no rush to get the data recovered, but it sure would be a loss to have it gone forever.

Thanks again to everyone for the help!

EvanK ,
I could not hear a thing .But if my Friends above say its a head thats now come out of its parking area and got stuck on the hard drive round rotating platters ,Then its heads stuck on platters. There are many videos on youtube that you will come across that perform the so called surgery of removing top cover and then dragging the heads out from the platters to the parking area .Almost all of them are doing this on older seagate aka samsung st1000lm024 drives .Releasing heads in these drives was easy and they would mostly go on the plastic ramp outside the platters .This is not the case with Western digital hard drives .The western digital hard drives if dragged out will come near the ramp and never load on the ramp .They will get stuck there .The technique is to remove the ramp then perform the process and use new set of heads if data is important .So Please Beware of The Same .I had made a video on my youtube channel after i started to receive a lot of drives that were butchered by customers/computer shops .Here it Is -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9F0XjzuKzgY

With the right tools and the right technique heads might survive. But they need to be inspected under microscope before reuse.
+1 Recovery Force is the way to go..
