Hi

I have a Z820 PC.
I have purchased a 12Gb/s 9361-8i 2Gb LSI Megaraid Card with Cachevault .

Ok so the dilemma !

Both the ST4000NM0035 sata or ST4000NM0025 SAS have max sequential of approx 210MB/s.

The ST4000NM0035 sata is 6Gb/s
The ST4000NM0025 SAS is 12Gb/s

I am of the belief that when I connect 8 of ( either ) of these in Raid 0 it will equal 8 x read and 4-6 x write .

I know this because I have a z800 with 9285-8e and 8 x 2tb HDDs .

So back to the dilemma , basically it’s cheaper for me to buy the 6Gb/s drives so I can’t see what benefits I would get from the 12Gb/s drives

Can anyone with knowledge of this please help out, if the read and write speeds will be “ approx” the same then how will the 12Gb/s drives benifit me with the 12Gb/s LSI MegaRAID card ?

I am wondering about the Internal Data Transfer Rate ? Hard getting the right information , but with that aside I realise this is the speed from the platter to the disk buffers although in raid 0 with 8 drives I wonder about the relationship this will have when combined with a Samsung 950/960 pro C:Drive.
I believe the internal data transfer rate of 0025 is 1200mb/s
I believe the internal data transfer rate of 0035 is 600mb/s

1) ST4000NM0035 4TB 6gb/s
Here :
https://www.seagate.com/www-content/pro ... 93636c.pdf

-Internal data transfer rate : 2936 mb/s max
-Sustained data transfer rate : 215mb/s max
-I/O data transfer rate : 600mb/s max

2) ST4000NM0025 4TB 12Gb/s
Here :https://www.seagate.com/www-content/product-content/enterprise-hdd-fam/enterprise-capacity-3-5-hdd/enterprise-capacity-3-5-hdd/en-us/docs/100793635b.pdf

-Internal data rate 2.32gb/s or 2320mb/s
-Sustained transfer rate 226mb/s
-SAS Interface maximum instantaneous transfer rate 1200mb/s (dual port = 2400MB) ! I believe this is a dual port however I am not sure if that benifit my setup or not !

I am thinking the ST4000NM0025 is the better drive however the cost of 8 is:

6 x 0025 = $ 950 AUD
6 x 0035 = $ 780 AUD

Or there is the HGST option : HGST 4TB 6Gb/s HUS726040ALA614
Here:https://www.hgst.com/sites/default/files/resources/Ultrastar_7K6000_SATA_512n_OEM_Specification_Rev1.0.pdf

-Internal data transfer rate : 1900mb/s max
-Sustained data transfer rate : 201mb/s max
-I/O data transfer rate : 600mb/s max

8 x HGST = $ 1000AUD

If this was your choice what would you choose to go with you 9361-8i 2gb?

I am using the megaraid as external drive for music production library
I will be using a 960 pro hopefully or if I can’t get it to work on the Z820 I will be using the 950 pro. ( Currently I have read 1600mb/s and write 900mb/s on my z800 PCIe 2.0 ) so I am hoping the Z820 PCIe 3.0 will pull in the 950 pro full ability.

So with the Samsung I am trying to create a raid 0 that will add 8 hdd s to match the 950 pro read and write 2500mb/s and 1500mb/s respectively. I think it will be close !

I am leaning towards the ST4000NM0025 SAS 12Gb/s however I would like to hear if there are other factors on the drive specs that are important that I am missing?

Thanks
