Don't get me wrong but if you are asking questions about how to clone a drive in .... WINDOWS .... using software only ..... you haven't reach a level (yet) where you can confidently and safely recover data from a "DM" Seagate drive ....

There are many things to account for like disabling background process at firmware, fix DOS table and media cache if necessary, patch adaptives in ROM so that new heads will read properly and this if you can properly swap the heads and select the correct compatible heads, etc ....

To add to all of that you might end up with a very unstable drive and you are considering doing a direct head swap without any firmware patching/manipulation (because you are lacking tools) and yet you do think that you can clone the drive under ..... WINDOWS ?

Forget it.

Either send the drive to a professional data recovery firm or forget about that data that you want to keep away from others.

See the positive side, if it's illegal porn at least now no-one will see it ! Just make sure to properly destroy the platter and you will not have to worry about it any longer.

Then buy a new drive (not seagate) and this time go get legal +18 porn instead !!!

If it's an ST2000DM001, you will simply ruin it.

If the data is important, buy two identical working drives of this model first (e.g. find someone, who sells used drives pulled from the same storage), fill them with data and then attempt to perform a head swap and imaging afterwards. See what will happen.
