Samsung HD204UI not recognized

March 4th, 2018, 9:17

Hi

First thanks for this great forum.
After a steep learning curve the last week and a lot of reading I need to ask for your input.

I had an external drive enclosure with a backup drive. Then, as usual, at a certain point it just died.
I removed it from the enclosure and tried it in my pc and in my Sharkoon drive bay.

No success.

Next step I took was to order a "similar" pcb and changed it.
The behaviour in the drive bay changed, but still no spin up.
Now after some days of "testing" it at least spins up with the new pcb, but it is not recognized from the pc.

So I entered the next level and did a lot of reading.
I measured as described here:
viewtopic.php?p=166418#p166418

And then I looked at those:
http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/HD204UI_TVS.jpg

And it seems that the 12V is broken, as I measured a very low resitance with the 200 Ohm setting.

Now my question - under the assumption the data is ruined anyway.
Is it worth to spend the time to fix this 12V link in case, that the drive could spin up again with the "old" PCB and is then maybe recogized again?
And what would be the correct TVS to solder there?

Thanks in advance

Christian

Do you mean that the 12V TVS diode has a low resistance? What is the resistance of the zero-ohm link?

Hi fzabkar,

the 0 Ohm shows no reaction on my Multimeter.
I tried from the 200 to the 200K range.

Not sure if it is an error 40.

Thats why I just attach the pictures with my measurements.

The 12V I measured with the 200 Ohm, the three other pictures are with the 2K Ohm.

The 12V TVS diode is shorted. You need to remove it.

The zero-ohm link is open circuit. You need to bridge it with a blob of solder.

After you have done your repairs, test the PCB off the drive. Be aware that your PCB was damaged by an overvoltage on the 12V supply, so make sure your PSU is producing the correct voltages.

If you ordered a matched PCB then replace and transfer ROM from patient to donor.

Thanks a lot!

I'll give it a try tomorrow, as I don't have equipment to solder.

But my uncle has ;)

Wow!

The disc spins now up and is recognized from the PC.

And I can "see" the root level of the drive with the folder structure.

But that is all :(
It clicks and clicks and does not read more.

It's not clear what happened here, but it appears that the drive has a head/media fault. If you wish to pursue a DIY solution, then try to clone the drive with HDDSuperClone or ddrescue.

At this point stop powering up the drive and contact the nearest pro for precise diagnosis. Sure if the data is important

Hi

I found now a local expert not far away from my home and will take it from there.

Again - thanks a lot for your support!

Please check that’s it’s actually a proper DR company that does just that, and not just a “PC Guy” that also happens to offer “DR Services”.

Good luck!
