Hi. I have an internal Western Digital Caviar Black and I'm using it via HDD Box as external.(Model : WDC WD1001FALS).

I have tested it for bad sectors by Easeus surface test 2 times and it reports no bad sectors. But when I scan it by Checkdisk ,it reports 1292 kb in bad sectors. The drive is Bitlocker encrypted.

My question: Is there any differences between Checkdisk scanning method and Easeus surface test?? Why the results are different? And is there any real bad sector in the drive and how to be sure?

CHKDSK will report what is marked on the filesystem as bad sectors.
Surface test will report the actual bad sectors on the physical device.
These two sets may well be different.

Use the "/B" option with CHKDSK. This will "re-evaluate bad clusters on the volume (NTFS only)".

So the Easeuse and programs like that must be more reliable because they test in lower level.Hope to be no real(physical) bad sectors on drive.
I've also checked by the following programs and they report no bad sector:
HD Tune
HDD Scan : Read / Verify / Butterfly
Macrorit Disk Scanner
WD Life Guard
Check Drive

I can't run Victoria , it gives some errors: driver, etc.
I will try chkdsk /b to see what happens.

I also have a MyBook 3Tb , and the Butterfly test by HDDScan marks all sectors as bad.Butterfly test description is : Read Data To the Host With Seeks
Other tests by HDDScan like Verify,Read, and SMART tests are ok and the programs below report no error on drive:
HD Tune
Macrorit Disk Scanner
WD Life Guard
Check Drive
Ariolic Disk Scanner
Checkdisk
Easeus

What does it mean? What is Butterfly test??

Code:
...the drive executes seeks in a butterfly pattern. Each butterfly seek pattern:

  1. Starts at cylinder zero.

  2. Seeks to the last data cylinder.

  3. Performs successive seeks over a progressively narrower range of
cylinders - incremeting by three at the lower limit of the range
and decrementing by three at the upper limit of the range - until
the drive seeks to the middle cylinder.

  4. Performs successive seeks over a progressively wider range
cylinder - decrementing by three at the lower limit of the range
and incrementing by three at the upper limit of the range.

  5. Ends with a seek to cylinder zero.

The seek pattern looks like a butterfly's wings, or a funnel (funnel test).

Code:
  0 .............. x
   1 ............ x-1
     2 ......... x-2
      3 ....... x-3
        4 .... x-4
          5 . x-5
        4 .... x-4
      3 ....... x-3
     2 ......... x-2
   1 ............ x-1
  0 .............. x

Hi.Why the Butterfly test fails on some HDDs.
I tried to check a WD 3Tb and a WD 4Tb and all failed.
As I understand from logic of Butterfly test it could be related to Speed of Read or Seek Operation. Is that right?
My first guess was this might be related to HDD Capacity but I checked a WD 6Tb and it passed the test. The 6Tb drive is newer than 3Tb and 4Tb drives.
Which SMART value could be related to Butterfly test??
Is that a bad sign of drive Health or Performance if Butterfly test failed?

My question would be, how can HDDScan perform a butterfly test at all? AFAICS, the software would need to know how to translate LBAs into CHS format. I don't believe that is possible in modern drives. There used to be a SEEK command in the ATA standard, but that was retired in ATA 7.

OK.But why some drives pass and some drives not??All drives are same series of manufacturer: WD Blue???
Do you know other programs to perform Butterfly test??

I don't understand what the software is doing. A true butterfly test is a seek test only, so the only SMART attribute that would be affected would be the Seek Error Rate, AFAICS. You should probably address your question to the author.
