Good Moorning,

First of all, sorry but I am from spain and I don´t have a good english. I am not an advanced user.

I have an Samsung HDD 1 TB with this dates:

Model ST1000LM024
PN HN-M101MBB/AV2
FW 2BA30001
PCB number 100720903 04

The hdd was broken 2 years ago with important personal data. I can´t pay for a proffesional recovery company so I bought an hdd as a donor with the same model, PN, FW an PCB.

The hdd had Clicking, it runs but not is recognized by the BIOS, ubuntu...

Finally, yesterday I made a head swap in my house (I know that it is very difficult to make it sucecsfull).

When I finished the swap, I put on the hdd and it was recognized by ubuntu (conected by usb interface) for 1 minute, I could see the folders but later the system dismount the disck automatically and it was not recognized again.

I think that now, the problem is not the head (I swaped the head again and the donor worked..).

The clik sound now is not present. It runs and the USB interface has the led on, but it is not recognized by the system and the BIOS (with the USB, I had a notebook and it nos has SATA in order to connect the hdd).

Today I will try to connect the hdd to other computer with sata port in order to see if the BIOS can recognized the hdd.

Probably the plattes have some damage (not crash signals are present..).

The questions are:
1-Can I force the BIOS for recognize the hdd?
2-can I do something in order to recover the data?
2-Can I try with other head swap with other donor?

Thanks in advance.

If the data is important, you need to decide how much important it is, and it is worth you risking destroying it forever. Or just store the drive safely while you save the necessary money to pay for the recovery.

You can try Spildit or José, they are from Portugal so shipping should not be that much.

But the more you do with things with that drive, the more you risk destroying it for good. If you are ready to that, ok, but if you really need the files in it, better think again about the possible strategies.

As for your questions,

1 - No
2 - The best would be sending to a professional, if you need the data
3 - You will be increasing the chance of destroying the surface of the platters, and with that your data. As I said earlier, you must decide if you can risk losing the data, or not.

Agree, if the data is at all important then PLEASE STOP messing with it, you can easily destroy it PERMANENTLY!

Sometimes yes, most times no. The problem will likely be after recognizing BIOS, as the drive typically is unstable due to bad sectors. So, high chance it will still not be successful.
You will need to clone to another healthy drive using more advanced tools to have any chance.
If the files are fairly important, then seek a specialist.

Thanks for the replies.

It is impossible to me pay more than 200 € for recovery the data. Is Spain is impossible do it for less than 1000 or 1500 €..so I want to try to do by myself.

Can you recommend me some software in order to clone the hdd or do an image?. The idea is to work with the copy for the recovery.

R-studio, dddrescue,clonezilla or other?.

I thing that the program should have the possibility of skip bad sectors, because the hdd still had problems.

I wait for your replies.

Thanks in advance.
Àngel.

Clonezilla's engine is based on ddrescue I believe. So, yeah this is fine. A little better is hddsuperclone. Careful not mixing source with destination, which is a common mistake. Though, best would be a hardware based imager that typically a specialist would have.

As far as your estimates, I think they are a bit exaggerated. Or perhaps you called the big dogs only.

There are.some people here on the forum in Spain who may be able to help you. For example, member colanco.

In two years, at a rate of 50 euros/month, one can save enough money to pay for recovery.

Either way, if you want to do this yourself, ddrescue or hddsuperclone would be some free tools to use. It would be better with the disk connected directly to SATA.

Also, if the disk is not being recognized in bios, changes are that neither software will recognize it also. Or, more, that forcing it to work can cause damage and make the data irrecoverable. As long as you understand and accept this, and also accepts that in the event of total loss you have nothing else to do, then go ahead and try cloning it first. Sometimes, it works, and maybe you can recover some of your files.

There is also some nice "insitu" commands to disable re-location either by setting a flag on firmware or by disabling re-location in RAM using a single VSC. That alone would had "prevented" for defects to be added to the pending list .... Now it's too late in my opinion ....

Do you have more information about this VSC to disable relocation in ram ? Could make some things less error-prone then doing through terminal ....

thanks
