Can you please show me a picture of the hdd label?

Updating this thread on the latest.

I ordered the same model My Book Duo, and finally got it (took awhile).

I reconfigured it for Mirror and put in the drives, and I'm able to see the files/folders.

It seems since there was no password set, this controller decrypts the contents from default settings.

Whew!

would like to thank @fzabkar for your help. much appreciated.

I probably will never know what failed on the original PCB, but I'd sure like to.

WD may get a warranty replacement for this, but I have to send back the bad one.

@metafizx, does your working My Book Duo spin up its HDDs if its USB cable is not connected, or will it only do so when it detects a USB host?

If you connect only the working PCB to the USB port, how does the OS see it?

You could use UVCView or USBDeview:

yes that is correct. The unit only powers on when the USB is connected.

I'll try it with just the PCB

working PCB with no drives is shown connected in Windows.

Your results would suggest that the fault is with the JMicron or Asmedia chips, or the USB3 connection. Can you communicate with the PCB via a USB 2.0 cable or USB 2.0 port? USB 2.0 uses different signal wires.

Your next test would involve shorting the HOLD pin to ground (on the bad PCB), as explained previously.

fyi...for that last test, it was plugged into a USB 2.0 port.

To eliminate the USB hub as a potential culprit, one could possibly remove the choke at L16 and then connect a USB 2.0 cable to the bridge-side pins of L16. I believe this would enable direct access to the bridge via a USB 2.0 port.

Hello guys,

i have also a problem with this controller.... I have the same mainboard.. maybe someone can halp me?:

I checked the caps C37, C36 and C89 for the 3,3V line by theJM Chip... C36 and C37 just have like 1,2V..... (see IMG 1)

I also could check a short on the caps + inductor on the image with the RT8060A.... (see IMG 2)

I am not recive the 3,3V on the SATA.. I realy couldnt figur out why :( Maybe someone can help me?

Than you,
best regard

That's correct. I was mistaken.

I also could check a short on the caps + inductor on the image with the RT8060A.... (see IMG 2)

Something is wrong here. Either a capacitor is shorted, or U2, or one of the chips that is powered from this supply.

I would try to find other shorted capacitors adjacent to the other ICs. This will identify the possible suspects.

fzabkar, Thank you for the fast reply,

i saw that the U2 (RT8060A) is burned. But i dont know where i can gat a spare part for it...

Do you think i could use another conrtoller and solder the old U5, U4, U11 and U12 on the new board? I am afraid that it will not work because of the encryption.

Try Digikey in the EU:
https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/richtek-usa-inc/RT8060GB/3078324

I would remove the IC and retest the PCB for shorts. It could be that the chip died because of a short on the output.

fzabkar, i removed it but there is still the sam short. I even removed the caps und and testet it on the board... both sides are grounded, so i think it is actually a chip?

Each chip will have a small, local bypass capacitor at its Vcc pin(s). It could be that one of these bypass capacitors is shorted.

Hello, dear forum members.
I don't speak English very well, so I apologize for spelling mistakes.
Recently, I suddenly stopped working My Book Duo. All three LEDs light up red.
Most likely like many on this forum, the controller has stopped functioning.
I managed to find the same housing on Ebay.
Accordingly, the question arose, can I install my 6 Tb HDD disks and I will be able to access my information?
Or will I have to solder the flash memory from the old case into the new one? Or download the flash flash dapm from the patient case and upload to the donor case flash? (programmer is available)
Please advise me how I should proceed in this situation?
I'm desperate :(
Best Regards
Siarhei Andreyeu

I don't have any experience with this product, but it couldn't hurt to make a copy of both flash chips. We could then examine them for RAID metadata.

You should also obtain a SMART report for each drive by connecting it to a SATA port in your computer. (The drives are encrypted, so the OS won't try to mount them.)
