Hello,

Need help with this.

Disk doesn´t spin up. Can´t hear anything.

Board is BF41-00178B.

Already searched for boards , but none that I have working is the same model. Does anyone knows if some other model would be compatible ?

Also, does it point more for sticktion / motor problems, or defects on the motor controller ? As this is the only board I have, I´m somewhat cautious about replacing the motor controller in it ( but would do, it that is necessary ) .

So, the hard choice : open the disk to see if there is stiction, or change the controller ?

As always, customer ( friend of a friend, actually ) says it "just stopped working".

Thanks.

Log follows

Problem is being to find another pcb.

I found only one, that had already been canibalized for its sata connector. Will replace it and test to see if the board is still working ( at least a terminal log ) .

Other boards have been always "almost that" . A couple with all the components the same, just the motor connector is different ( and being considered for some "experiments" ) .

ROM in this case would be inside the Marvell chip. But even before rewriting old rom to the new board, the motor should spin, right ?

Unfortunately, sending the drive away won´t be allowed. One would thing people without backups would be more reasonable, no ?

Can SRT read ROM from this drive, or it isn´t compatible ? A guide in your site says it doesn´t work for new Samsung drives.

Also, I still have to find it for download. Any other alternative ?

Measure the resistances between the motor terminals.

Measure the voltage across the spindle motor current sense resistors during the spin-up attempts. This will tell you whether the motor controller is trying to spin the motor.

Resistance about 2.7-3.x ohms between them, either with board installed or not. Also the same reading in another disk ( that works ) .

These guys ? The red or the green ones ( or both ) ?

Newer designs don't have spindle current sense resistors (the sensing is done inside the IC), but if yours is one of those that does, then I would bet that the green resistors would be for the spindle motor and red for voice coil. Usually one end of the spindle resistor array would be grounded whereas one end of the VCM resistor array would connect to the HDA pins.

One side of them goes to ground through that via. The other goes to a pin in the motor controller, and I suppose through a via in the underside to the motor.

Referencing to that screw near them, the green block measures 0V . The red ( upper ) block measures around 5V. Didn´t take much measurements around it because I´m without the fine tip points for the multimeter .

ISTM that the motor controller is faulty.

You might like to measure the voltages at each of the motor terminals. Look for pulses.

Gonna try with the multimeter in the office tomorrow, it has a better response time than mine at home.

Someone said they had a 320GB Samsung, so tomorrow I´ll drive around and look at some more disks. I do not to borrow working disks, because many things can happen when trying to fix something, and I dislike having to worry about the owner of the lended parts, but if no other option presents ...

I remember that with hitachi´s it is a no-no, but does with this families of Samsung a simple board swap just for a fast testing would damage either the disk or the board ?

About firmware tools, woudn´t Sediv and SHTR be redundant ? Or the Sediv utility for Samsung still isn´t as capable as SHTR ?

About the $$ for the tools, people in our small leftist countries don´t agree to pay much for recoveries, so the fund for new tools grows slowly .... been saving for Sediv, but not there yet.

Also, I admit I never did this with a Samsung, but where is the version of the firmware in the pcb ? Is that F1_1D in the label, or do I need to use a "DV" command in ttl to see it ? Or just adapt the pcb and go ahead with it ( "damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" ? )

Also , the SHTR demo will be able to write the ROM ?

Thanks

@rogfanther, I believe that "F1_1D" is the family, ie SpinPoint F1, 1 disc.

Your terminal log shows "SHOS-(1AC18bzM.d11)". ICBW, but ISTM that this is the flash version, ie "1AC18bzM.d11".

FWIW, a flash version of 1AC18bzM.d17 is associated with the HD161GJ, firmware 1AC01118.

https://recuperodatos.com/disco/samsung-hd161gj-hdd-3-5-sata-160gb-595-3916

If you have a working donor (HD161GJ or HD322HJ or other member of same family), I believe it would be possible to hack Dell's updater to flash your patient's ROM into the donor PCB. Of course, you should backup your donor's ROM and SA beforehand.

Hi Frank,

Yes, that´s is the idea, more so if I end up borrowing a drive from someone. I´d really prefer to just buy one so that in case of accidents I would need to answer only to me, but if that is impossible, and since people here don´t agree very easily to part from their good working Samsung drives, I may need to be able to restore it to its original condition.

Along with the board for the patient one, I´m also looking for two disks with same boards, so that I can practice the procedures before risking both drives.

BUT,
If the (demo) tools can write ROM to new board and overlay to the patient, then it should be

- backup donor ROM, FW, SA, etc
- do the modifications to the board ROM
- do the recover of the patient
- rewrite donor board with its original ROM
- check if everything is ok then reassemble the donor disk.

Yes, that sounds like a plan. BTW, I have used Dell's updater to restore the ROM in another thread, so I know that the procedure works.

Ok, let´s see what models of hdd / boards I can find tomorrow .

Thanks for the help until now, gentlemen.

You shouldn't be using that SRT anymore.

By now and because you keep on posting about DR you should have spend some $$$ on firmware tools ...

At least get SeDiv, WDMarvel and SHTR.

SHT DEMO should be able to read ROM on your drive :

http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php? ... 1565#p8556

:? :? :?

I'm trying to register your hddoracle.com. At the end of the registration there is a question that makes me feel stupid.
"What is the name of this forum ?:"
I tried these : hddoracle, hddoracle.com, www.hddoracle.com, thehddoracle, Registration, board. So on lots of tries with stupid answers that I can't type here.
I'm tired of resetting modem for new ip.

I intend to pay for tools ( first Sediv, probably, as it comes with the utilities for more brands in the same package/price ). Just can´t do that for this case, as the money reserved for tools is still not enough.

I got a drive that I think will work, the board at least is the same. Sadly, it is borrowed, so I will need to make a backup of its files first, "just in case."

One idea : the important part is the ROM in the pcb, right ? Them, if I can read the rom from the patient, and rewrite it in the donor, shouldn´t that be enough ? I´m thinking about Frank´s method of rewriting using the Dell utility.
