@einstein9, please stop your silly posturing and just tell us the models you are talking about.

The idea that the PCB will "die" after head swaps seems implausible, unless you have messed up the HDA pinout, or there is some difference in the preamps or preamp supplies.

Will explain it more here to have a better understanding:

I backup resources (full +rom) then plug it to the PC install windows and leave its default setting and Hibernate and then it never spins back by all means.
Then, i read ROM with my programmer and compare it with its Original ITS THE SAME, read all resources n compare it with the original FW (which i took the 1st. time) its the SAME 100%

Moving ROM to new PCB spins normal,,

Tested it with 3 drives and killed ALL OF THEM (MCU)

Now, conclusion here and this is FYI

I have a similar customized App. like the Job Organizer Ref. http://hddsurgery.com/job-organizer and using it here
we always enter notes about clients drives and always asking what happened before the hdd fails/die or whatever (Indexed & searchable)
and enter it, after some time when you get similar models with similar problems this rings a bell where i verify it myself

but this specific problem i tried with new drives and have at least 5 drives in total and am sure its a PCB Design issue
(Thats why i have many dead/faulty pcb`s to repair viewtopic.php?f=1&t=36695)

hope this answers your question.

Model of the drive ? Is it IBM/HITACHI/HGST M24 Arch based ? Maybe something changed on NVRAM ?

OS hibernating have to write to drive pagination file and also state of the OS and only then it can issue ATA command to spin down the drive. I don't how embeded ROM code could have a BUG that would kill MCU ?

Only thing that i can say is that the OS would send a command that the drive would not properly process and would erase the internal bootloader ? Even so this is not very likely ...

Is this with a specific drive model/PCB number ? If so can you tell use the PCB details so that we can try it out ?
