SMART question for ST32000542AS !

May 21st, 2018, 13:29

Hi, so i have a drive Seagate Barracuda LP ST32000542AS, and
in parted magic i see
Code:
SMART overall-health self-assessment test result: FAILED!
Offline data collection activity was never started.
Auto Offline Data Collection: Disabled.
  5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct   0x0033   036   036   036    Pre-fail  Always   FAILING_NOW 2642

I did MHDD test off all surface and now issues, almost as new.
When i try to enable "Offline data collection" hdd clicks but not enable it.
And tried to permanently disable SMART with smartctl -s=off /dev/sda and
after reboot it's ON again.

So it's first to me that strange behavior, and
could i disable or fix it ?

Safer aproach would be to replace the drive and if possible DON'T BUY SEAGATE !!!

So i need to wait until it's complete 'swap' process ?
I once did recover same model hdd from 0lba with SMART clearing via TTL,
should i try it on this SMART clear ?

Spildit wrote:What i'm saying is that the drive did found some bad sectors that it couldn't re-use and swapped those by spares meaning that now you do have entries on the G-List.

If you clear S.M.A.R.T. the Re-Located sector count will not change as you will still have entries on the G-List so S.M.A.R.T. will still display as "BAD".

You could move G to P but most likely the drive will die very shortly anyway so it's better to replace it now.

I want to understand in which way it's failing.
I did surface scan and it's OK, and it has not data on it, and
i want to learn from current state of hdd:

- is it false-positive alert [ and i can ignore/fix it], or
- it's gonna die tomorrow ?

Never trusted SMART.

Gonna run secure erase tomorrow, and then
mhdd scan will see if it helps.

It won't help.

Reallocated_Sector_Ct is the "problem" so if you run Secure Erase and/or MHDD the value will not decrease, if you have bad blocks it will only increase !

Also if you run security erase all data will be gone !

The only way for you to make the Reallocated_Sector_Ct value "decrease" or re-set to zero is by clearing the G-List or moving the G-List to the P-List and re-format all sectors to correct the ecc for the new "translation" if you add defects to P.

[ don't worry about data - contains none]

Completed 'secure erase', you are right - SMART = FAILED! persist.
So i can via TTL connection clear G-list, and 'FAILED!' will be gone ?
Looking at other smart and overal condition and surface test hdd is
working fine, and only thing is 'realocating..' flag is making SMART
freak out.
Also tell me what else cosmetics i can do at home via TTL to
make it look better ?

So i preparing for the operation:
- i set up USB-TTL on win10x64 with v10.1.2.2115 driver
- updated putty to 0.70

and when is all be connected and ready
i should issue that command:

Code:
F3 2>/1

F3 1>N1

Clear SMART is completed.

F3 1>/2

F3 2>Z

Spin Down Complete

[ power off the drive]

right ?

Cleared SMART, and now
no more SMART: FAILED!

Procedure was done on 'HDD ST32000542AS'
using 'CP2102 USB to UART Bridge Controller'

I'm aware that this drive can't be trusted
with serious data.
I just wanted clear that annoying SMART
alert which i achieved.

Thanks.

You are right, the drive can´t be trusted.

Also, the drive can´t be sold in its state. It is not a good drive anymore, notwithstanding what SMART or MHDD says.

And another "refurbished" lemon ends up on eBay this afternoon.

Hello purenoise. The best way to test a Seagate drive is with Seatools. That is because we don't publish drive attributes and thresholds as a matter of policy and 3rd party utility results need to be taken with a grain of salt. If after running the test and it comes up with anything, you may contact support.

the best way "I" test a Seagate drive
I trow it from the tallest building in town and I check if its still working (gets me very good results)
since to OP is in Ukraine, may I suggest Klovski Descent 7A ?

Respectfully, in comparison to several advanced tools, Seatools is a very basic and limited software tool to check drives with.

Could you explain in more detail, please? This is a confusing-even conflictive if you will-statement.

Well, one question then : when said tool returns an error code "312345", where are said codes listed and explained ? Does anyone in "support" even know what they mean ?

This can't even be considered a refurbished or even a cosmetic fixed drive.

You should move G to P and re-format all sectors several times to make sure that you can read/write to all sectors without any new addition to G-List !

Ok, HOW TO "move G to P" at home with USB-TTL ?

NO 'LEMONs' on EBAY.
I bought this used hdd to keep it as
'donor' in case of fail of current 'same model' hdd.

After some use & testing drive responds
as normal, and it performs great.

Buy some firmware tools like SeDiv and use the automatic function to do what you intend. It's the easy way.

Thanks for the suggestion,
never heard about SeDiv
- gonna learn about it.
