Odds of recovery from a scored platter

May 24th, 2018, 13:25

Dear friends and brothers,

What are generally the chances of recovery from a ST2000DM001 with a slightly scored top platter? Slight scratches. Looking to recover mainly photos, videos and work documents.

What about the other surfaces? Have they been inspected?

Dear pcimage,

The other surfaces are fine, just the top surface is scratched. Should I keep the hard drive safely and hope for new advances in recovery technology?

May I ask how you know this for sure? Did a competent data recovery company provide pictures or other proof OR was it your examination (if so, how?)

Unfortunately, foping for something like that will lead to disappointment. Newer and new technology developments are focusing on completely different technology types.
Furthermore, the problem is not so much with the current technology/methods of recovery, rather with the disk damage/scratches themselves.

Hey Merc,

We have had multiple successful cases with scratched platters - depending on a position of those scratches. If you are looking to get back larger files like videos, you can forget about it. But if you are only looking to get back some pictures or documents that would be in the area of under 2mb in size, then there might still be a good chance of getting it recovered.

Do not give up my friend.

Best of luck!
