If pre-amp is gone, will a head swap help? I have it out to a clean room specialist and this is what they are recommending, but it will cost me. They say there may also be platter damage but none visible. Could a short circuit cause platter damage? Drive worked great previously.

YES, if done by a DATA RECOVERY PROFESSIONAL and NOT a regular computer repair shop or by a random guy with a "clean room" ...

Most likely you will not have media damage on your case or at least not significant damage as long as you didn't open the drive already outside a hepa 100 environment.

No I definitely didn't open it myself. I sent it to a place with a very professional and positive online presence including 5 stars on Yelp.

I wish customers would be business owners for 1 month and deal with companies like Yelp (and other). Their perspective is likely to shift dramatically.

Would you be able to share what city on the East Coast the drive is located in?

I was talking about this only :

All reviews/stars/awards on places like Yelp or whatever is just garbage and doesn't mean a thing.
