Toshiba Replacement PCB G003250A

June 12th, 2018, 9:07

Hello all, first time poster here

I am trying to repair a Toshiba MQ01UBD100 for my brother.
The disk spins up but makes clicking noises, and no data can be read.
I am aware that this could be for multiple reasons, but as a first attempt, I tried with a replacement PCB G003250A.

With the replacement PCB, the LED lights up, but the disk does not start spinning.

The original PCB USB info shows:
ID 0480:0212 Toshiba America Inc

The replacement PCB USB info shows:
ID 174c:5136 ASMedia Technology Inc. ASM1053 SATA 6Gb/s bridge

If I understand correctly, the next step would be to switch the BIOS chip IC602 from the original PCB to the replacement PCB.
However, I have my doubts that this achieves anything because the disk does not spin at all with the replacement PCB.
I was assuming that the HDD would still spin up with the replacement, but I would not be able to read the data because the BIOS chip serial number, etc. is not correct.

So my question is, do you think the problem lies in the replacement PCB or is it possibly just the BIOS chip that needs to be replaced? Does anybody of you know whether the HDD could spin with a replacement PCB without BIOS chip switched?

Many thanks in advance

99% It is not a PCB issue. The reading heads are most likely dead and that is why the drive is clicking. If you have not opened the drive, most data recovery places will give you a free evaluation and tell you exactly what the issue is.

+1

but see your 99% and raise another .99%

Keep powering up the drive will make things worse. (Scratches to the surface)

It means:
1. The PCB is OK
2. The PCB is original
3. The drive cannot read from the platter . Bad head(s) or bad media.

Hey all,

Wow thanks so much for your replies! Agreed, it must be a mechanical problem. I thought I give it a shoot with the PCB before biting the bullet.

I did not open the drive of course, and I also did not switch the BIOS chip. So the hard drive is now again in original condition except that I opened the plastic casing.

Do you have recommendations for a data recovery place? Preferably one that would create a quote for free?
I live in Europe, but I don't mind sending it to the US or somewhere else abroad.

Best Regards
