Could that prompt be coming from the MCU's kernel code?

If you have another Toshiba PCB, you might like to try invalidating its ROM and observing the terminal output. You could do this by shorting an appropriate ROM pin (eg /Hold) to ground.

I think i will try to get a Toshiba with damaged heads to play with the PCB and see if the message % is from the kernel MCU code. If so most likely my ROM is gone.

Another thing is that with normal Toshiba drives you do have to press enter to get to >.

On this Toshiba drive you will get % as soon as you power the drive up ...

I think i will have to do some more experimentation.

Flash is bad. This prompt comes from the MCU when the flash is removed.

I would test the voltages at each of the flash memory pins.

The drive doesn't have any important data for recovery. This drive is from a pile of Toshiba drives that i'm trying to refurb by disabling heads and zones. I've been doing this for the past 2 or 3 days and i did manage to refurb a bunch of those Toshibas by disabling one head. So no problem at all as the data is of no value.

I think i will plug this PCB to the power supply and i will measure the voltages.

I can try to read ROM as well with external programmer but this is not a priority right now. I think i will try to fix my broken Quantum first and i do still have a bunch of those Toshibas to refurb but eventualy in a day or two i will check this PCB and ROM.
