HDD has massive slowdown on reads an especially writes.
Writes are at 1MB/s.
Tried 3 computers, win7/10, free dos, same results.
Tried 3 different cables - same.
Tried different ports - same.
Reformatted, blanked, deleted - same.

Dont know what to do?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

I just bought this one from a re-seller, but he refuses to admit its defective :)

Perhaps something like surface retest, or blank firmware :)

Bad luck i guess :D

Bricking is of no issues now. If the tools are to expensive it would not be worth it though...

Victoria says
Unk.size; L/A=ON; Wr=ON;
Which means they are both on.

Seek test is like 300ms

Read test 256kb/s :D

Trying WD Marver

WD Marvel is of no help, ARCO and SS are disabled in free version.

Found WDR 6.0 but it just pops priviledged instructions.

Searching for 5.3

The answer might be in the average response time in the one image, which is 4350ms. A high response time without errors is usually an indication of the "slow" issue. The drive will read some data, then hang while the background scan is doing something, then read again, hang again... And as stated, who knows what the seller did to the drive. It can never be trusted with critical data for sure. But there is a way to disable the background scanning (aka the "WD slow fix"). Do a search on here for "slow fix" and look through the results... if Spildit doesn't post a more direct link before then :)

Also a full zero fill would write to all sectors moving the ones on re-lo to G-List and the drive have 0 re-located sectors as well ... So the problem is elsewhere ...

Either ROM is not native or pre-amp is not working as it should, etc ....

Maybe the PCB itself have problems ?

Who knows ...

I tried cleaning and contact cleaner, alcohol all over it and reassembly. Same results.

Definitely something not that benign...

Uhhhmmm....

The drive does have 0 Pending sectors and the Slow issue is caused mainly by entries on RE-LO list that are processed by the MCU of the drive consuming a huge amout of resources ....

Doesn't look like the slow problem to me .... At least the one related to RE-LO list and bad sectors ....

Remember, we have seen a drive that had no pending or reallocated sectors suffer from the slow issue. If that is the problem then it still indicates that there is something wrong with the drive and it can't be trusted, but that would be up to the OP as to how the drive is used, knowing that it has issues and could fail at any time.

Ok, got something done :)

Found a WDR 6.0 Free version and combined an old PC for Win 7 32bit with IDE compatible mode.

Did bunch of thing on the hard drive (clear smart, p-list, g-list etc) no change.

Did manual "slow fix" and HDD came to life.

Read and Write speed not quite perfect, but seek time is, anyhow much better. Here are some screenshots.

But, now I have another question :D
I have been playing with WDR and "fixing" old drives.
There is a problematic 2TB green drive, everything works fine, but when i did smart reset it would not erase #197 - Current Pending Sector Count.
I did surface test, Self Test, it just stays.

I tried manually changing module 21, even modified a .bas script so it shows me where are those SMART values in block 21 and 24.
While I can change block 24 - I cant 21. I write zeroes, a choose module write (same as i did for slow fix, and module 24) but it wont "take" :)

Any help with this?

Thank You all for opening this part of tech to me! :D
