We have the same kind of things around here, probably the other "excuses" you didn´t mention ocrcur here also, and most of times receive some adequate answers :
1. "Then we will do only the cheap version of the work and recover what is easy, since data is not worthy. Or you should forget about it and use the money for a new hard disk"
2. "Good. Then you pay the normal price now, and for each more work you send us you will receive 10% of the price they paid."
3. "I know, I remember you, but we have our expenses to pay. Father will agree."
4. "Well, then I will not keep you here. It is better to take the other pro´s offer before he changes it.."
5. "Sir, our price is that and we cannot change it."
My experience, mostly from 2) and 4) is that customers plainly lie. They have no intention of sending jobs to you and do not have better quotes. Will just say anything just to get some advantage, then later forget about what they said, promises and all.
Those that just cry about the price I can even accept and try to work something with them. Those that want to resort to the lying I feel like saving their recovered data to an used Seagate DM drive.
