Hi everyone,

I have the typical case of this ST3000DM001 clicking hard drive. I replaced the heads but still clicking (the usual 11 clicks).

Original heads were dirty so media must be damaged. I can see a nice scratched part of the first platter.

I could assume that heads get fucked up over and over again when they passed that area... right? Seems to be.

If the P/N of the disk is: 9YN166-xxx you can assume that all the drive is a sh*t (like almost everything that comes from the seagate factory)

If you can see damage on a ST3000DM001, just assume it's a lost cause. Usually always is.

can you get a read out of the other surfaces? Is it salvageable?

Nope, heads get ruined with the disk itself

Yes. So you should physically delete heads on damaged surfaces to be able read other surfaces.

Don't expect to recover anything larger than 5-10 mb in size... if it's pictures and documents you should be ok with at least some files. If the scratch is on the top platter, the chances are not so great, but still worth a try.
