Seagate DVR lock drive

July 17th, 2018, 17:22

Hi I have seagate 3.5" classic series 500gb hard drive. Puis enabled on it. Tried MRT and HDAT2 for disabling. While trying to disable PUIS by MRT it gives error and do nothing. And after power off on the drive still goes to same condition i.e does not spin.

No need of Data. I have the other drive with different fw. but how can we replace the fw in this model? how to backup the fw in classic series and replace it as the terminal is lock.

I can't find any document which explicitly states that DB35.3 drives are SEDs. However, these drives incorporate Seagate's DriveTrust Technology which does provide for full disk encryption.

2. Trusted send/receive command set

DriveTrust communications are sent through the trusted send/receive (in/out) command set, designed in collaboration with the standards bodies that define ATA and SCSI interfaces. Secure messaging has been designed into the ATA and SCSI interface protocol to enable support for security technologies, including DriveTrust technology.

3. Secure partitions

A 200-GB hard drive reserves roughly 200 MB of unaddressable disk space for internal system storage. DriveTrust technology uses this space to create secure partitions that are both logically and physically separated from the rest of the drive storage, with strong conditional access controls -- providing an excellent place to store cryptographic keys and other sensitive information.

DriveTrust-equipped drives can make these secure partitions exclusively available to applications that present the proper credentials to store application code, additional content or data. ISVs (Independent Software Vendors) can make use of this capability to build applications with additional features including stronger authentication, time stamping, forensic logging or transaction data.

4. Issuance protocol

Software applications, BIOS and other programs interoperate with the DriveTrust-equipped drive through strictly controlled communication channels. ISVs and other developers can write applications and have them assigned to a secure partition in the drive through the issuance protocol. Anytime the application attempts to access those secure resources, it must present its credentials -- given under the issuance protocol -- to the administrator function in the drive. The administrator function authenticates the application, activates the appropriate secure partition, and allows the application to interact with the secure partition through the trusted send/receive command set.

ISTM that the OP's failure to spin up the PUIS enabled drive would suggest that a "trusted" VSC is required to do this.

Yes you are right fzabkar. Its not SED. Seems that its full disk encryption with seagate drive trust technology. Below is the partition detail in image.
But the drive can be repair if we change the fw. Will pay the fee if anyone can help me in this regard.

Re: Seagate DVR lock drive

Sorry, I was confused. I thought that your were unable to get your drive to spin up. Now it appears that standard ATA commands (Set Features or Read/Write Sector) will spin up the drive, it's just that you cannot disable PUIS using standard ATA methods.

Your latest screenshot suggests that you have no problem with data access once your drive spins up, so it is not "locked" in that sense. Therefore ISTM that you need to locate the PUIS flag bit/byte in your ROM and flip it. To this end I would obtain an "unlocked" DB35.3 drive and compare its ROM images before and after enabling PUIS.

yes initially drive is not spin up but when it connects to terminal it works fine until we power off the drive. After power on drive goes to same condition, while disabling the PUIS feature it gives error. Due to "serial port disable" none of the operation can done, also I can not Read the Rom of this locked drive
Yes, I have the DB35.3 "unlocked" drive with different fw. Can it help?

Read the ROM on your "unlocked" drive
    Enable PUIS
    Read the ROM again
    Compare the two ROM dumps

ok If I find the difference in both the ROM but how can I edit the "Locked" drive's ROM as I can't Read the ROM. ROM Reading is not accessible in the "locked" drive.

Do you have a programmer with an SOIC clip?

Can you reach the patient's SA with your unlocked donor PCB?

Re: Seagate DVR lock drive

July 21st, 2018, 2:13

Yes I have programmer and I read both the ROMs of "ok hdd" and "patient hdd".
The unlocked hdd is not accepting the command of enabling PUIS so I can't read the Rom after Puis enabled.

I applied unlocked donor PCB on patient hdd and drive goes in busy status can't read SA modules.

Re: Seagate DVR lock drive

July 21st, 2018, 2:20

Wouldn't you need a loader to access the SA for this model? That is, could you reach the patient's SA with the donor PCB and donor loader?

Could you upload the two ROM images?

Both ROMs are attached. You can check. If you don't mind can I have your skype ID?
