The CODF CP is actually the ROM itself, well most of it, anyway. It is not a security related CP.

    0x6000 - 0xB2B8F -- used space for CODF
    0x6000 - 0xBCFFF -- reserved space for CODF

The remaining CPs are located at 0xBE000 - 0xFFFFF.

BTW, I'm using the term "CP" only because I don't know the real terminology for this architecture.

Maybe @Doomer can do us a favour and get his drive locked with ATA password. Then he can dump GNRC CP so that we can check if password is stored on that CP ?

Highly unlikely the password would be in ROM, you don't think it would be that easy.
You guys wanna RE it - knock yourselves out just don't think that dissecting ROM to parts is all you would need to do.
Unfortunately there is nothing to gain for me here, so I'll pass on it.

Dissecting the ROM is relatively easy. However, reverse engineering it is beyond my knowledge and patience. I never thought it would get us anywhere, anyway. Still, you have to start somewhere.

Maybe we can access to the SA of those newer drives with the vu_dft_read_reserved_area command. Problem is i don't know if it will work on a locked drive.

My hat was tasty :) I think you and Franc should dissasemble the ROM down to metal and then share what you have found or EVEN better write a freeware app for unlocking etc etc

I think we would ... If we could ....

Not that simple ... But we will try.

It's way more easy when some firmware tool like PC-3000, SeDiv, etc already have implementation to deal with a specific FW arch as we can "sniff" the commands from that tool ...

Not so easy to "reverse" the ROM... Also on other families like IBM "ARM" even if we don't know a specific "new" model we can check ROM for "super on" and the rest of the commands are more or less the same. We get module directory and we read modules. Also the memory access commands tend to be the same ...

This is complelty new drive so we can't re-use commands that we already know about...

Maybe i can try format unit and if the drive does accept it (with password lock) maybe the password will be gone when format unit do complete ....

I know sniffing is the easy way, but, I think you may appreciate the hard work involved if you do it yourself.

I wll try but i don't expect to go far ...

Also a working drive of that model would cost $300 or more ... With that money i can buy 500 or more drives of older models .... Not worth the price. I don't want to pay $300 for a single drive and mess it up trying to figure out VSCs ....

Now that's exactly the reason DR is expensive.

Maybe in your world, but for the rest tha main reason DR to be SO-O-O expensive is GREED...

every month we have a fixed budget for research (been increasing recently), and buying those new drives is one of them trying to be 10 steps ahead to understand things better later

Now that's exactly the reason DR is expensive.

Its not the DR, its the research & the results that costs specially when you get to know something new and nobody or FEW knows

No.

It's simple.
In order to bring results, you need to invest in parts/new techniques/whatever. This costs a lot of money.
Example:
The He drives.
How do you recover them?
In order to find how, you need to buy parts and experiment with them (which may mean you will brick them).
Each drive costs 500 euros.
If you buy 10 of them to experiment and learn, this is 5k.

If I learn how to recover them and ask an amount of money for them, having already invested 5k+ for them, is this greed?

1. You don't need 10 drives to learn how to recover them . You need only one , second hand and having bad sectors, i.e. cheap. You may read some documentation about the new command set as I did, but you are lazy . Oh sorry, you don't have time for this.
2. You ask the same amount of money (+500$) even in simple cases like burn TVS or dirty contact pads. Your excuse is that you'll cover your investment, but in fact this is an ugly robbery.... and you know it very well.
3. Another excuse - the family. But your victims also have families , don't they?

OK the truth is I could easily start a flame war here, but since this is my last day before holidays and I'm in good mood, I won't.

Ironically too, this is true.

But, since I don't even know who you are and how the fuck you jump into conclusions like this
BGman wrote:

I'll bite and play your game.

Based on this
BGman wrote:

and since I am lazy,
I want you to show me documentation about how to unlock new WD arch7 drives. I'll pay for it.

Also, I want you to show me a 12TB He drive which is used and cheap.
I need to learn how to open it, break into its FW, measure its dimensions and make a custom head comb for it, to be able to change heads. Then I need to experiment and see if He is important, or if it will be enough to just let it run like that. If it is, then I need to find a way to fill it up again and make sure He doesn't escape.
I'll send you one drive like that (a cheap one, with bad sectors) and I expect you to show me the above. Of course, I'll pay you what you want.

Deal?

Can you access the firmware of an unlocked drive? If so, can you upload its resources?

If I understand your question right, the new WD drives like Palmer and Charger have locked (signed) FW and you need to find a way to break in.
In some newer models, the ROM is also encrypted.
