I have a ST2000LM007. Makes a few beeps never gets ready. Ive done my research on this model/family and know i should not even attempt this one.

I am suspecting head failure. The MCU gets very hot, like burn your finger hot when it is plugged in. Considerably hotter than a working drive of the same family. PCB removed it only gets barely warm. This leads me to believe something in head assembly is shorted out.

Drive is from FEB 2018, so i am assuming a manufacturing/design defect here rather than simply failing from old age. It was in a Seagate USB3 enclosure so physical damage is also a possibility.

This is a client drive, so i will need to run it by them for approval, but if anyone wants to give this a shot im taking offers.

Heads are moving back and forth for sure. Can be felt. PA, somewhat near Philadelphia.

Ok, then I misunderstood your saying that the drive was just beeping.
You should contact Don at https://philadelphiadriverecovery.com he's in your area.
Those drives are quite prone to media damage, so hopefully the drive has the surface intact.

If you want somebody local, then I also recommend Don Anderson in Haverton.

Assuming the heads are what's actually at fault and the platters aren't destroyed, our price here in RI is $650 plus the cost of the donor hard drive to pull heads from. Donor parts must be paid up front, but the recovery fee is only if it's successfu.

Thank you for all the replies and messages. I will be checking with the client to find out what kind of budget is available.
