I did recieve this one to attempt data recovery or at least to refurb the drive.

It's an old "Raptor" with small capacity .... 74.3 GB ...

So prior to pocket out some $$$ on a donnor PCB (they are not cheap and i don't have any on stock as they are old and WDC MCU BASED - Prior to marvell) what are the chances for the PRE-AMP to have survived ?

I don't want to pay $50 or more for a PCB only to end up with a clicking drive with damaged pre-amp. I know that the risk is always there but the look of the damage (by the side where the chip did "burn") is it likely that the pre-amp did end up dead as well or there are some chances for it to have survived ?

If there are some chances for it to had survived i will consider to get a replacement PCB otherwise i will just forget about this ...

I would bet because the preamps are fine.
Plates of a model of WD BLUE I have repaired variás changing the driver of the engine. That also has broken the motor controller and changing the controller only to the motherboard could be fixed. Auqnue for greater security change the complete PCB.

Better change of full PCB I had not noticed in the Q3 area.

ISTM that the damage is on the motor side, ie 12V.

I would test the resistances between ground and each of the preamp's power pins (1, 2, 4). I would also test the winding resistances at the motor.
