MRT should recognize the family of the drive, thats what you need to start with.

Ask your customer about the colour of the label. If it was blue the family is Atlantis, If it was green - Kermit. The heads are the same, only speed is different.

I'm not suggesting that you are wrong, but my question would be, if the heads are identical, and if the RPM is different, then wouldn't the heads fly higher in the 7200 RPM drive?

Yes it's Atlantis, I wonder, is it enough just the family to find compatible heads? for the seagate disks I had to match with the exact model, and not only. is it different for wd?

Good point, as velocity increases so must the pressure. With the increase in pressure, the separation between the head and media can be increased.

If the drive passes tests at 7200RPM they make it Atlantis, if not they changes FW to run at 5400RPM as Kermit. You can find the head model at C5 module (as well as family name) or head code at module 0A of ROM.

For a case like this, I'd compare the serial number (which should be on a sticker on the bottom of the drive) with other donors of the same family. That'll get you pretty close.

I see in my resources some 00500AP firmware versions with serial numbers around WCASY37... I'd bet yours is close to that, so just aim for an Atlantis family drive with similar serial and you'll probably get the heads you need.

@magnetepazzo, you can input the serial number into WD's warranty checker:
