Data recovery and disk repair questions and discussions related to old-fashioned SATA, SAS, SCSI, IDE, MFM hard drives - any type of storage device that has moving parts

Hi,
My first post on here, so hopefully it's in the correct part of the forum.
I have an old HP / Compaq 6930p which came with a 320GB Hitachi HTS723232A7A364. I recently swapped the drive out for a 1TB drive that was originally in a USB caddy. The 1TB drive works fine in the laptop but the Hitachi drive refuses to work on either of my 2 USB controllers or my QNAP NAS. Both Ubuntu & Windows XP see the drive but get I/O error when trying to format the drive. If I put the drive back into the 6930p it works fine.
HDD Scan sees the drive & reports the following via USB:
Model: Hitachi HTS723232A7A364
Firmware: EC2OA60W
Serial: E3834523G7NA0N
LBA: 625142447
The firmware looks to be the same version as is available for download on here so I have not tried to re-flash in case I brick the drive.
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks

Is it password protected?

Yeah, that was it!
It had an auto password set in the BIOS, I removed that and it's now working fine in the USB caddy.
Many thanks folks for the swift replies and your help.
