Hi All,

I've got one of these 2.5 5400rpm 1TB HGST HDDs:
HGST HDD 5K1000-1000 HTS541010A9E680 FW:560
Unfortunately the SATA speed restriction is not supported in FTOOL.
I would like to limit the auto-negotiated speeds to SATAII, instead of the current SATAIII as my 2011 Early Macbook Pro struggles with SATAIII in the optibay adapter (known issue https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1tb-hdd-early-2011-macbook-pro.1584023/).
Since there is a reduced speed version of this under HTS541010A9E662 to SATAII, is there a way to restrict the controller on mine?
If so, please could you advise what equipment I would need to perform the changes necessary?

Perhaps could have uploaded a better image about the "black label" version of the 5K1000 1TB, here is a screen shot from MacOS showing that it only negotiates SATAII instead of SATAIII speeds within system info. This is HTS541010A9E632, while the one I have is HTS541010A9E680 (which negotiates SATAIII speeds instead causing an issue within the optibay).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

While googling around a few days ago, I came accross your post previously, also managed to install Niagara but the trouble is, it does not recognize my drive (tried the motherboard sata port (FTOOLS work with it), also within a Jmicron USB caddy).
How do one initiate a drive with STPI drivers under Win7 for Niagara?
Furthermore, what is the bespoke IBM tool used on the screenshot?

@snackmasterx would be a better person to ask. I don't use either software. You might like to try forcing IDE compatibility or legacy mode for your SATA controller in BIOS. This should make your SATA drive look like PATA.

As for the bespoke tool, it appears to be HRT. HRT is commercial data recovery software plus hardware.

Dear All,
Thank you for the replies and further suggestions, much appreciated. I will try another mobo today/tomorrw to see if Niagara pics the drive up.

I'm in London at the moment but the price of SeDiv takes it beyond financial viability for a £40 1tb 5400 drive unfortunately.

Will report back here accordingly after a little play with Niagara.

Hey Spildit et al.,

I hope you are well.

First of all, thanks for the offer and all the suggestions, all have been put into consideration.

To update on the case so far, a windows reinstall solved the STPI recognition issue but know when I try to set it to Sata2 (or in fact try any other command) it just fails to send it in ATA mode:

autoloading package "Tk" ... OK
Starting CIL Base...CIL v4.3 Loaded
Creating UIL spti Driver...UIL creation success: 0: spti: v1.0.4: dev count=2
Rescan Successful. 2 Devices Detected

TCL console display active (Tcl8.6.5 / Tk8.6.5)
Switched to ATA tab with SCSI drive selected. Recommend selecting ATA drive.

Error (0 ms) At 05:28:27 11/17/18

<E> CMD Send: Send Failed

(uil=0:spti)(dev=0)>

I've just duble checked and currently running Niagara with Admin privilages within Windows.

Any ideas what I could be doing wrong here?

Dear Spildit,

Well spotted, that is exactly what the issue was here.
Unlike Snackmasterx's drives, mine (the bespoke HTS541010A9E680) gets recognized using STPI driver but do not communicate with the controller correctly.
In order to resolve this I had to try in "ATA drivers" instead when opening Niagara (screenshot attached) and all was good from that point.
Unsure if this is an outcome of the combination of my Mobo's controller/Intel and/or the HDD's controller itself though.
Please also see the log for further reference from Niagara:
autoloading package "Tk" ... OK
Starting CIL Base...CIL v4.3 Loaded
Creating UIL ata Driver...UIL creation success: 0: ata: v0.1.8: dev count=2
Creating serial driver...UIL creation success: 1: serial: v0.7.1: dev count=0

Thank you for your help, now the drive's negotiating SATAII speeds only :)

The above SCSI command sends an ATA command to the SCSI storage device by tunnelling its ATA taskfile registers via "ATA command pass through". This particular command is the 12-byte version. There is also a 16-byte version. AIUI, this pass-through approach could be used for drives behind a USB-SATA/PATA bridge, or any ATA drives that are accessed through a SCSI driver.

SCSI Pass Through Interface (SPTI):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCSI_Pass_Through_Interface

Code:
ATA command pass through(12) - CDB: opcode=0xa1

a1 06 20 FE SC LL LM LH DH CM 00 00
-------- ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
SCSI      ATA taskfile regs
opcode

And when I thought you won't contruibute any more into this, haha, I can see the ton of useful content above!!

I will have to try this via an ATAPI/USB caddy then, to see if it is visiable as well.

Just to confirm, yes, I used Niagara 4.3 (customer) which detected it successfully after a clean windows 7 64bit Ultimate install.

Many thanks once again Gents!
