 Post subject: Burnt Chip on WD PCB

I have a WD800JB-00JJA0. I hooked it up to a faulty external drive enclosure and burnt up something on the PCB. It looks like it’s “L4”. It looks melted. Possibly C62, too. Any idea how I could fix this? Or at least temporarily use it to get the data off?

It appears that the failed inductor (L4) is in series with the +5V supply. Therefore I expect there is further damage, possibly to the preamp. :-(

If the preamp is damaged, you will need to replace the head stack assembly. If it's just the PCB, a PCB swap (and ROM swap) will do the trick.

Thank you. I will try a new PCB with a transferred ROM chip. Do you think it's safe to plug my device in now to a proper connection and see if it spins up or does anything?

Do you think it would be safe to power up the drive again with a proper connection to see if it spins?

I ended up trying to plug it in again. Nothing happened at all. No noise or anything. I'm going to get a replacement board to see if that fixes it.
