WD Black Brand New S.M.A.R.T Spin-Up Raw 98784247810 good?

As the title states, I purchased yesterday a brand new Western Digital model WDC WD10JPLX-00MBPT0 WD Black 2’5 inch 32MB cache HDD 1TB. I booted into Hiren’s BootCD. I ran Victoria HDD/SSD v4.72b software on it as soon as I encased it in an external enclosure and looked at its S.M.A.R.T read out. I am confused to see that the Spin-Up time raw value read out is 98784247810 VAL 100 Wrst 100 Tresh 33. I do not really understand how to comprehend the S.M.A.R.T readout, but I presume that raw 98784247810 is not normal. I then ran a full write test from Victoria and it was fine, no problems. I refreshed the S.M.A.R.T reading and again the same Spin-Up time showed. I looked at the S.M.A.R.T read out using GSmartControl and I get Raw value 2 Norm-ed value 100 Worst 100 Threshold 33. I then used Western Digital Data LifeGuard Diagnostics - DLGDIAG for Windows and it does not have a raw section. I was only able to get the following readout Value 100 Threshold 33 Worst 100. These are the only readouts LifeGuard has. I do not know what to do. I have another Western Digital that I purchased 1 week ago which is a Black 500GB model WDC WD5000LPLX-00ZNTT0 and its S.M.A.R.T Spin-Up time raw value using Victoria it is 1500 VAL 150 Wrst 149 Tresh 21, in GSmartControl it is raw value 1500 Norm-ed value 150 Worst 149 Threshold 21 and in Western Digital Data LifeGuard it is Value 150 Threshold 21 Worst 149. I presume the Black 500GB has a good Spin-Up raw value and the other values are good. I did run the LifeGuard’s quick test and it gave me a displayed message that it passed. Any understanding on what is going on with the Black 1TB?

Later in the day, I also used CrystalDiskInfo 8.0.0 to read the S.M.A.R.T. for the 1TB and 500GB. The raw value for the 1 TB is 001700000002. The 500GB raw value is 0000000005DC. I have no idea what they mean but it might be of further use for whomever can help.

Your drive is a rebadged Hitachi. Therefore the SMART data need to be interpreted as for a HGST drive, not WD.

Hitachi packs several 16-bit values into the raw data, so they are best displayed as hexadecimal values, which is the default output format for CrystalDiskInfo.

I have been busy for the past few days but what has been on my mind is this post to find my answers. I am finally able to be back.

Fzabkar, The picture you gave is exactly the HDD that I have from Western Digital. Is what you are saying normal for me to receive a rebadged Hitachi HDD when I clearly purchased what should be a Western Digital HDD? Is this something I should return and swap it for another 1TB Black Western Digital? I have not register the 5-year warranty yet with Western Digital thinking there is something wrong and I need to return it.

As seed.helper requested for me to also try Hard Disk Sentinel and to "right click on your mouse and select decimal" the value is 2 like GSmartControl gave me which is also 2. Is 2, or one of the other values I first posted, a good value for the raw value spin-up time for a Hitachi as fzabkar has now indicated I have? I am Googling it but nothing is coming up. I do not know how to interpret the raw spin-up value as good or bad except that it should not be 0 or what I first thought was a crazy large number like I first posted 98784247810.

@Decker, it is vary rare for a manufacturer to provide public documentation for their SMART data. The meaning of these data varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, and sometimes between models from the same manufacturer.

As for the drive being a Hitachi rather than a WD, WD now owns HGST, so you can expect this kind of rebranding until the HGST name disappears altogether. Seagate did the same thing with the Maxtor brand, and is now doing the same with Samsung's brand. In any case, DR people prefer native HGST drives over WD, so count your blessings.
