Hi all,

One of my disks failed today and would like to get it going.

Seems to load fine, no clicking or anything. Checked the solder joints on the ATA connecter and seems fine.

Drive will boot up but is not reconised by the system, or causes it to hang.

I connected the terminal and got this result.



Looks like it might have developed a bad sector somewhere important. Any ideas.

Hi all again. So, with the information on the above post, I would like to know how much it would cost to have a professional to get the drive up and running and what the problem could be.

I have a feeling the drive might have messed up the SMART data, or ATA Loader when the computer had a funny power cycle. The hard drive in general has been working flawlessly until this happened.

For some reason my TTL adapter is no longer working, I can still see the drive transmit data though the LED but I think my computer has decided not to work this instant. Anyway, I prefer not to dive too deep into this just incase I completely brick the drive.

The data on the drive is partly backed up on another, so I have that to restore on, but there are still a large chunk of data that I do not have. I would like to get the drive in working order again, so how likely is this to be a easy fix and the cost.

If someone would like to have a go, preferably in the UK for postage reasons, please PM me.

Hi, in this case it's better to get the data and store on a healthy drive, this drive will not last long.
I can recommend PcImage in Peterborough...he will help you at a fairly low cost at this stage.

I think you were right Spildit, Looks like this drive might have had a failing head and messed up. Looks like the problem will be too expensive to fix.

I assumed the SMART and G-list might have been corrupted, so I cleared them, ran some tests on the drive heads and everything came up fine. All heads appeared to be successful. Then the interface age went funny, tried to fix that, then the drive froze, reset it and now is only shows



"HM" is the drive Click and Buzz. Must be a dead head? there are 16 of them.

The drive did contain data, but that was backed up, so no problems there, but there was a large chunk of movies and TV series on there which I would like the directory structure of so I can re-download from where I left off. Does anyone know if windows XP stores a list of directories in it somewhere?

Or is there a way to force the drive to stop buzzing and copy the fat table from the drive through serial?
