Seagate drive stopped booting after slowing down. Took me awhile to piece together how to connect to serial. Spun fine, but couldn't issue commands as it was busy throwing LED 000000something. Tried shorting the read pin pair, but during power cycling to get the timing, it decided to start chirping and throwing servo fail op=0168. At least now I can send it commands now!

Now, could someone lead me where to go from here?

It sounds like the drive was beginning to fail before you attempted to access it. Repeated attempts to get the drive into terminal mode seems like it has made the drives condition worse. Chirping and servo errors are very typical of read-write head failure.

Can I suggest you take it to a Professional Data Recovery company for evaluation. Most reputable companies will give you a free evaluation. Any further attempts to access the drive may make it worse.

Unfortunately hindsight is 20/20. When this thing started dying 2 years ago, I just chalked it up to a bad windows 10 update... I used to have the same problem as described here: https://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?t=33410 until the third attempt.

Here's the head detection.

Code:
HighPowerMode
TCC-001BStatus 0001 Req 0002
Head 00 Resistance 0107
Head 01 Resistance 013D

I can also provide the boot sequence if that'd help.

Boot sequence would be good. What does the drive sound like when you boot it up?

It spins up normally until the first servo fail, then there's a click or two and a chirp.

Does the drive then keep on spinning or shut down?

It does keep spinning. It stops chirping after the Sim error 1002. Every chirp happens with a FAIL Servo.

You have some corrupt system files. What tools do you have to work with this drive?

I have a working pc, an Arduino Uno used as a usb-ttl, extraputty with y-modem, a blank 2tb wd hdd, and a spare atx psu to power the drive in question.

No pc3k or the like though if that's what you mean.

Clone the drive if possible, if the drive ID ok, use ddrescue or similar tool.

Hmm. Are the corrupt system files repairable with what I've got?

And what do you mean by "if the drive ids okay"? As far as windows and the bios is concerned, it doesn't exist.

On another note, I'm seeing if there are any pro dr's around town that'll do aforementioned evaluation, although I'm at a bit of a loss sorting said pros from mom an pop's laptop shops.

IMHO it cannot be fixed with the tools you have. It does seem like head failure. If you PM me your location, I we will recommend a trusted pro in you area.

Then I won't risk botching cloning the drive. We'll see what we can come up with around my area.
