WD800JD SATA HDD not working.

May 11th, 2019, 17:00

hello.

a couple of days ago my Western Digital WD800JD SATA HDD died.
the BIOS wouldn't detect the drive. so i checked the data and power connections and they were in proper working order.
but i noticed that the Smooth L6283 1.3 IC chip on the PCB got extremely hot while the drive was powered up.
the chip and the surrounding components are not visibly damaged. and the rest of the PCB and components look normal too.
if it is just the chip that is damaged, would it be possible to just replace the PCB with another PCB from another HDD of the same model?

And transfer U12 from patient to donor PCB

Hello there :

1 - What is the FULL MODEL of the drive ?

2 - Does the drive spin up at all ? Any strange clicking sounds ?

3 - Most likely PCB is OK if the drive does spin up ... It might have damaged firmware caused by degradation of surface/bad blocks, etc ...

4 - On your PCB ... Do you have a WDC MCU or a Marvell MCU ?

thank you. hopefully i can save the drive and the data on it.

Is the data IMPORTANT ? Are you willing to pay for a professional data recovery service ?

Again if the drive is spinning and if you have an old controller like WDC MCU most likely the drive does have other sort of failure like module damage or translator damage. Same goes for Marvell mcu based drives as long as drive doesn't click ... If click heads most likely are gone ...

Goes without saying DO NOT OPEN THE DRIVE ITSELF !!!

Re: WD800JD SATA HDD not working.

i know not to open the drive itself.
i think the drive is spinning. i know that i can feel the drive spin up when the drive powers up , but i'm not sure if it continues to spin.
and the heads don't move when the drive is powered up.
i'm also too poor to even think of using a data recovery service.

please disregard my last post. there is some information in it that is incorrect.
@Spildit
the drive is a Western Digital WD Caviar SE. model WD800JD-60L8A5.
from what i can tell (while holding the drive. i know i know. not the smartest thing to do but i was grounded)
the drive does not spin up when the drive is powered up. and thankfully there are no clicking sounds.
as far as the health of the drive. there were no bad sectors. the drive was in good working order the night before it died.
in the morning when i started up the system, the hdd was in it's current condition.

this is the MCU that is on the board

just try to change pcb and see what is happening.if spining, change the original ROM chip to DONOR pcb.
if you have no experience with soldering work don't do it your self.

Agree ... Just try a new PCB then but for you to gain access to the data you will need to swap the ROM chip or read it and write the content to the new PCB with SOIC 8 clip and external programmer (if you don't want to solder) ...

Re: WD800JD SATA HDD not working.

i will try swapping the PCB out for a "new" one as soon as i can get a hold of a donor drive.
thank you all for your help. if this works, you all will have saved me a lot of time and hard work trying to recreate alot of the files that are on this HDD.

Re: WD800JD SATA HDD not working.

Just remember ... You have to swap the ROM CHIP as well (or copy the ROM content out) to the NEW PCB otherwise you will not be able to access your data ...

Regards and please tell us if you manage to make your drive work again !

Update:
i got a donor HDD today.
but as i was trying to remove the U12 chip from the winxp hdd board, one of the pins broke off flush with the chip. am i totally screwed at fixing the winxp hdd now? or do i have another option?

Which pin?

this pin

EDIT:
and another pin just broke off.
it is clear now that just my soldering iron and a small needle is not good enough for the job.

you should have done this with DONOR PCB. now you late.

i think this is vcc pin. now you should contact DR center.

sometimes fzabkar give an idea.

Maybe now you should consider this ?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Western-Digita ... 2919788728

You would need to provide a donor PCB in good shape (without damage to the ROM chip).

thank you all for your help.
but sadly i can't afford the cost of a DR center or even the service listed by Splidit.
if anyone knows of a way i can recover the data without having to use an outside DR service, it would be a huge help to me.

sorry for the double post. for some reason i can't edit my last post.

i just installed the donor board on the patient drive. the drive spun up just fine with no clicking sounds.

You need to re-create the ROM. It can be done with for example the PLUS license of WDMarvel. It's possible but it will cost you way more than my services ...

You would need "decent" firmware tools to work with your drive and write a compatible ROM that does allow access to SA. From there you would need to regen adaptives to match your drive, etc .... Require know-how and tools or tools with function to do what you need.

For example the basic license of WDMarvel doesn't allow you to regen ROM module that you need. You need PLUS license (more expensive).

Your data your choice ....

If you do have at least some basice firmware tools you might be able to fix the drive by yourself but you would have to $$$ for firmware tools anyway ....
