I have some 10K rpm WD VelociRaptors 2.5'' SATA hard drives, each one inserted in a radiator 3.5'' frame.
The model is WD1500HLFS-50G6U1.

All those drives have a sticker "Warranty void if removed" that will be broken if I unscrew the 2.5'' hard drive from its frame.

Apart from the radiator function, I want to understand the role of those frames, as each has a SATA to SATA circuit board and some sticker with parameters that look like those of regular Western Digital hard drives.

So, is there some calibration / optimization played by the adaptor frames?

Can the hard drives work correctly without them?

I have a potential buyer for the frames, but don't want to make the drives unusable. Hence my question.

The heat sink frame is just that, nothing special with a passive pass-thru Sata connection as I remember.

But it is desirable to have them fitted if the drives are to be used for any length of time.
