Seagate Expansion+ ST2000LM007 does not spin

May 27th, 2019, 15:34

Hello, I have a Seagate Expansion+ 2TB external hard drive that doesn't spin up: when I connect it to the USB port it beeps 23 times, then it stops. Stuck platters? I did some research online and that could be the reason, but I'm not sure. It just died, no apparent reason. It is detected in disk management as an unallocated drive with an impossible amount of space (roughly 130000TB). The LED on the PCB doesn't turn on when I connect the drive to my computer, but if I connect just the PCB without the drive attached it does. I opened the case and the model should be ST2000LM007. Is there anything I can do to recover the data by myself? If not, how much does data recovery cost? If you need any additional info let me know. Thank you in advance.

Some USB ports have trouble providing sufficient current to spin up the drive. For example, USB 2.0 has a limit of 500mA while USB 3.0 is rated for 900mA. Does the drive spin up when you connect it directly to a SATA port on your computer?

Most likely heads stuck to platters or mashed into the ramp.

If this is the case, then please don’t try the so-called “fixes” on YouTube or wherever. On this model, the heads are almost always bent/deformed so will damage the media rendering recovery much more difficult or even impossible.

There is always the small possibility of insufficient power as fzabkar suggested, but if it’s been working fine on that PC and then suddenly stopped working then this is extremely unlikely.

Thanks for your help. I tried both USB 3.0 and 2.0 on multiple computers, and since I'm using a laptop I can't connect it to a SATA port. Now that I've got a grasp of the prices I can tell that what was stored on the drive doesn't justify the cost of the recovery. Fortunately, It was mostly a backup drive.
Are these kind of problems covered by warranty? Even if I opened the chassis (but not the drive itself)? The drive died some months ago, less than a year since the purchase date.
Lastly, if it isn't covered by warranty and before eventually throwing it away, can I try to open the drive myself or would it be just a waste of time?

You can verify the warranty status using Seagate's online warranty checker:
http://support.seagate.com/apps/customer/en-US/warranty_validation.jsp

If paid data recovery is not an option, then try some "percussive maintenance".

1. i think now you have no warranty.

2. 90% can't be recovered by yourself.

Seagate's Tech Support will sometimes allow you to open the enclosure without affecting your warranty. WD often does the same.

I have some news, the drive now spins. It still makes 23 beeps but now I hear something moving inside (back and forth?) every time it beeps. Is it good or bad?
I'll contact Seagate to know more about the warranty; the drive is still covered (checked with S/N) but I wouldn't be surprised if they blamed me for the drive's fault and therefore refuse to send me a replacement.
