HDD PCB Component burnt. TSV?

Hi,
I have an old IDE drive , Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 300GB. st3300822a. The device does not spin up, and there is clear and evident damage to a component situated on the PCB of the drive. I have tried my best to photograph the drives PCB and the component. Would anyone by chance know if I could replace this component or if there is a fix - as I would like to recover the data on this drive. Many thanks..

- I have seen a video online whereby someone desolders the chip... Is it that simple? Would I not have to replace the component?

That appears to be a 5V TVS diode. Hopefully this diode was able to protect the preamp from the overvoltage. If so, then removing the diode should be enough to recover your data. However, make sure that the +5V and +12V supplies are OK before powering up the drive.

Potentially hot air desolder the TVS? Would I need to do much more then that? Before connecting power, use multimeter to confirm voltages?? Many thanks for your fast and knowledgeable reply.

You can snip the diode with flush cutters.

Use a multimeter to measure the +5V and +12V supply voltages at the SATA plug.

Then power up the board on its own and make sure that it doesn't have any obvious problems.

Otherwise you can purchase a replacement PCB with the same firmware version and do a direct swap, without a ROM transfer.
