WD80EZAZ Not Spinning after Windows Software RAID Set Up.

June 24th, 2019, 11:24

Interesting one here. Two drives were initially set up as a Windows 10 software RAID 0. Client then moved the two drives to a new PC and tried to import the RAID configuration. The import failed (not sure why) so client moved the drives back to the original PC. However drives do not spin up.

Here is the strange thing. Mounting the drives in PC3000 I cannot see anything wrong with them. SMART also reports no issues. Putting the drives into a docking station they also boot up with no problems. I put them into a Linux machine and and again they boot up fine. But putting the drives onto a Windows SATA connection they do not spin. Even just connecting the power (without SATA port) the drives do not spin.

Linux knows how to spin up a PUIS-enabled drive. Windows doesn't (?).

Yes you could be right. This is a newer drive with locked FW so its hard to tell. On the older WD drives PUIS was set by jumpers but not on these. W7 did have a bug for not spinning up PUIS drives but that was fixed a while ago. This is in W10. Client has his data so its no biggie. Thanks for the input.

I would have thought that PC$10K would tell you if PUIS were enabled. :o

In any case you could use a tool such as HDAT2 (freeware) to disable PUIS. Just remember to lauch HDAT2 with the "/w" switch to spin up the drives.

Looks like this is another issue and not PUIS related. Thanks for the input.

Could this be your problem?

Power Disable Feature (SATA 3.2+ / 3.3):

It is possible a fault could have triggered Devslp, but that would not explain why the drive boots in Linux and via a USB docking station. Do you know how to force the drive out of Devslp so we can test?

DEVSLP is not a firmware setting. It is purely hardware. To disable it, just ensure that +3.3V is not present in your SATA power cable.
