Hi, excuse my English, I speak Spanish and have no practice in English.
I have 2 similar HDD. One stop working and I don't know how recover data on it. Here's the data of 2 HDD.

HDD 1 (BAD)
2TB Site: TK
SN: Z4Z0HZ98
MODEL: ST2000DM001
PN: 1ER164-300
FW: CC43
DATE: 15045

HDD 2 (Good)
2TB Site: TK
SN: Z4Z0C44E
MODEL: ST2000DM001
PN: 1ER164-300
FW: CC43
DATE: 14506

The bad HDD busy the PC when connect on Windows. I try load the HDD on Ubuntu.
The HDD start spinning, make some noise and stop. Then the HDD is load as a HDD with 4.1GB capacity. When you connect only the PCB to the PC it appear like a HDD with 4.1GB too.

I swap the PCB of 2 HDD and any one work;

The bad HDD do the same: start spinning, make some noise, stop spinning and load like 4.1GB HDD.

The good HDD spinning normally and load like 4.1GB HDD.

Help me please, I really need recover my data.

Bad heads and possible media damage.

1. Cannot swap boards without swapping the rom. ( issue is not a board problem anyways)
2. Drive spins up and clicks and then spins down, 99% head problem

Nothing more you can do on your own unless you want to put your data in danger.

Seagate DM series are the worst.

If the data is important I would recommend finding a reputable data recovery firm to evaluate the bad drive for you.

If you really need your data you won't try DIY methods. And be aware that every power cycle decreases the possible success rate, because the surface(s) might be in bad condition.

This is GrenadaBP2 family HDD. They have some incompatible preamp types. Preamp type can be seen in terminal log, which is locked in this family. So, just an amateur can really do nothing but spoil the drive, which had been quite ok.

Remove PCB from drive and Try just with PCB. It would probably show 3.89 GB. That's usual Seagate shows
