Folks, thank you for reading my post. I am trying to diagnose a hard drive problem.

The hard drive with failure is a Seagate ST2000DM001-1E6164.

The hard drive was inside a fantom external usb case. It is disconnecting from the system after a couple of minutes. (or seconds sometimes)

I managed to run CrystalDiskInfo while it is still connected to the USB. (Attached to this post)

My question is, if I know the firmware (CC45), can I use another PCB that has the same firmware (CC45) or write CC45 to the donor PCB to try to restore functionality to this hard drive? Thank you.

Note: I have also tried placing the drive on a different external case and it does the same thing: It will show up in windows explorer for a couple of minutes or seconds and then disconnects itself and the drive letter goes away.

problem is bad sectors I think or in worse case a weak head, no PCB swap will help to resolve the situation, contact a DR Pro to do the job.

If you are trying to repair it, I advise you to rather trash the drive or sell it for parts and get a new one.

Thank you for your suggestions. What causes the drive to disconnect itself? I thought that would have been PCB related.

99% nothing to do with PCB. Bad sectors and/or firmware related I would expect.

The firmware issue is on the platters btw.... not the PCB.

Thank you for the information. Can the firmware issue on the platters be corrected through the PCB serial connection?

If the issue is REALLY only firmware, with a serial connection and the right commands it might work.
But probably you have other problems...
