ST31000524AS analyses

Hi forums,

a friend gave me a faulty ST31000524AS drive (falling damage). Doing IT for 15+ years I'm somewhat experienced with "most of this stuff". Also, this is not the first HDD I open up. But when it comes to this point - AND in case the data is important - I'd rather stop tinkering with it.

So I just opened the drive for a glimpse and checked if there's any obvious damage done. https://imgur.com/a/UAS2g6J

Looks clean (I think?). The data needs to be recovered. Since I don't have any specific Hardware (PC3000 or similar) I plan to send it to Andy (@datarecovery). Before I do so, is it anything worth to check logs with an UART-Adapter? (I have one of those I think)

Forgot to actually describe the problem...

The drive spins up, no unusual noises. Also gets recognized in tools like Parted Magic and other diagnostics (via UBCD). Windows is installed, booting it ends in a I/O error (BSOD).

it isn't just the wrong legacy\secure boot setting in the BIOS is it?

If its detected, why did you open it ?! If its detected in parted magic why don't you just used dd_rescue to get an image of that drive and use some kind of software to get the files out of the dump? But if data is important stop messing with it and contact professional for help before its to late ...
