I just picked up a pair of Western Digital Red 6TB drives. They seem quite noisy and I want to make sure this is not an indication of defective drives.

I contacted Western Digital but they weren't that helpful:
Quote:
I understand that you are experiencing issues with the WD Red drive. I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.

Based on your concern, I would like to inform you that some noise will occur during normal drive operation. Although, it is important to recognize which noises indicate trouble or normal drive operation.

There can be several reasons why a WD drive may be making noise:
The drive is not getting enough power to fully spin up
The drive has failed.
Occasional clicks during data access,
Hard clicks during a head park operation (shutdown or sleep mode).
The data cable is faulty, or incompatible.
You may refer to the link mentioned below to determine the common causes and troubleshooting for them:

WD hard drive makes a repeated clicking sound

If the issue still persists then, you may replace the drive, please refer to the link mentioned below in order to learn about our replacement procedure and create replacement:

I've included recordings of the sounds that I am hearing, hoping someone here can advise.

Drive Off.mp3 (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1oLSLwiAKJjHL14dj5kCKohWC3kQL1a07) - This is the sound I hear from one of the drives when it is turned off.
Reading.mp3 (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1mek0vBiaM5LoUwuV50xJPvvKdAwBL2g2) - This is the sound I hear from both drives when performing a read test.

Thanks!

I can barely hear anything in the first recording, and nothing at all in the second.
