Hello, I`ve a big problem. There is a Seagate Hard Disk (I will late filing the serial etc.) which is not working. The drive will be not recognized with kali linux. I believe that there is a problem with the electronics, because you can hear the engine of the drive a few seconds - that´s it.

Please help me to answer the following questions:

1. Is there a tool to check if the circuit board is defective or the engine?

2. How can I determine which engine I need, if the engine is defective.

3. In this case, how probably is it that only the circuit board is defective.

If the drive spins up, 99% confident it is NOT an electronics problem.

Yes, exactly so. I’ll raise it to 99.99%

Does the drive spin and then stop? If so then it’s most likely a physical issue (e.g. heads and/or media damage.

If it sounds normal and carries on spinning happily then it’s most likely a firmware problem. Meaning the fw is damaged or is corrupted, so CANNOT be fixed with a “firmware flash” before you ask! :-)

Sorry to say, this isn’t DIY either way.

If you need the data then please send it to a recovery specialist with the right tools and knowledge and NOT a regular “PC repair shop” (they quite often make things a LOT worse, or not recoverable). It shouldn’t be too expensive AT THIS STAGE.

If you don’t need the data then RMA it, trash it, or wait until you can afford proper recovery.

Yes, the drive spins up.

Yes, exactly.

The drive is of a friend of mine and he doesn`t want to give the drive to a specialsit, because the data are important but not so important to pay thousands of Euro.

I will open the disk and will check if the problem is the Read / write head. If yes, it is probably to correect it.

If you open the drive yourself, you will almost certainly kill it, or make it much more difficult to recover, because you will introduce microscopic dust particles that cause damage to heads and media. As already stated, this is not something you can do yourself. You can only make it worse. If it has value, get a quote from a reputable data recovery specialist. Don't keep messing with it unless your friend doesn't care about the data at all.

Esattamente.

Buy a USB-serial adapter and show us the diagnostic messages from the drive's terminal. More info at hddoracle.com.

Hello, there, thank you all!!

O.K., listen, I opened the disk a few seconds. Contrary to expectations the r/w head was in the parking position. I started the disk and i saw that the r/w head is going in the middle of the disk two times - then the r/w head went to the parking position. After that the r/w head the same - than the disk went offline. The drive beeped a few times.

Do you think that the r/w head is defective?

Sorry, what do you mean with that? The drive wouldn`t be recognized over the USB Adapter.

Oh dear :-(

"Contrary to expectations".. Whose expectations? Certainly not ours.

From what you've now said about opening it up and letting the heads sweep across the platters without the benefit of an air cushion, you've most likely only succeeded in making things a whole lot worse.

You've been told the heads are bad, yet you continue to play with it like the heads will miraculously mend themselves the more you tamper with it :-(

Your first answer:

Quote:
a physical issue (e.g. heads and/or media damage.

In addition im the internet are a lot of these cases documented and the problem was the r/w head. The head has been stucked ihn the middle of the platter. Also you can expect that.

I said explict that a profssional Recovery it`s out of the question (the drive belongs a friend of mine). I personally had a problem like that, i opened the drive, moved the r/w head, closed the drive and connected to the PC - i could revover the data. Why should that work twice??

But equal, what is meant with that:

how us the diagnostic messages from the drive's terminal. More info at hddoracle.com.

One place I think charges $350+- if the HDD was immediately sent in, without any DIY.
I'm afraid the price will likely be much higher now.

Yes, the heads are damaged and maybe media too after your unsuccessful operation. Better to return the drive and if data is worth it, contact a professional recovery specialist.

Thank you

Hello, there!

O.K., I bought an identical hard disk (Seagate ST2000DL003; Firmware CC32) like the defective drive. I KNOW, that you can repair that only in a clean room normally. But, I said it already, that is too expensive for my friend. You don`t have to help me, but if you want, you can do that glaldy.

I want to remove the platters form the defective device an put the platters into the replacement hard disk. What is the best way to proceed? Is there any tutorial`?

PLEASE, I know that that is risky, but better than do Nothing. I hope you will help me.

Sorry, but you are wrong. It guarantees the data will be unrecoverable by time you finish. It would be better to suggest your friend hold onto the drive until he decides it is worth the cost. Around here (N.A.), that would likely cost under $1,000 USD, and probably under $500 USD -- certainly not "thousands of Euro."

Addendum:
Oops! I see that you opened the drive and watched as it spun up and attempted to read but then parked the heads. The data is still probably recoverable but not for $1,000/$500 USD any more. You are more than half way to totally destroying any chance of recovery.

Is it not possibile to try to help instead of recommend to contact any recovery specialist?????? He will NOT go to any specicalist, because

1. he want to pay money

2. he will not, that someone can see his data

PLEASE accept that!

Well, one way to NOT have someone see his data, is by doing what you suggest. It won't be possible at all. By anyone.

*Facepalm*

Why do people come to a forum of professionals, ask for professional opinions and then completely disregard everything being said?

Symptoms: Seagate that spins down
Client question: could it be electronics (PCB) issue?
Professional answer: not electronics (PCB) issue, definitely heads & possibly media damage, needs a professional
Client response: I ignored what you said, confirmed that it isn't something else, powered the drive on with the cover off and confirmed that it is behaving exactly as expected based on the technicians response
Professional response: you just made it worse and more expensive to recovery by a professional
Client response: even though my friends's data is super valuable, they don't trust the professionals, but they trust me, the guy who doesn't have a clue what I'm doing and just made things worse by ignoring the advice I sought from the professionals

Good luck.
