I have a WD My Passport that was working fine the last time I used it (probably about six months ago) and has been sitting in a drawer ever since. When I went to plug it in to my desktop, I got an error saying that there's a fatal hardware error. After some googling, I tried using EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, but after scanning, it told me that the drive was a "Lost Partition" and it wasn't able to recover any files.

I'm really worried, because the files that are on this drive have been there for 6+ years and are more likely than not the only copy of those files. I realize now that that's a bad practice, but stupid past me thought this as an "infallible" way to do long term data storage.

Is there a way I can tell what went wrong with the drive? I shudder to think all the data is really lost, and I'm crossing my fingers that it is in some way repairable, even if I have to send it out for a hardware repair.

Thank you in advance!

Since your data is of value, I STRONGLY suggest to NOT power up the drive anymore and send the drive to a good DR professional.

NOT A HARDWARE REPAIR SHOP, a DR professional.

Let us know where in the US you're located and we'll suggest one for you.

NOT a DIY candidate, unless you don’t particularly care about your data, which by the sounds of it you do! :-)

We're WD authorized for data recovery and warranty replacement. We're located in GA but provide free shipping. We'd be happy to eval your drive at no charge.

We are in Massachusetts. We can stop by and pick it up for free if you are within 40 miles of Boston.
Price will be from $300 for software issues. Hardware issues, higher cost.
Need to perform a diagnosis first to determine the exact problem(s).
