My Book Essential not recognized

May 4th, 2020, 12:22

Hi. I have a My Book Essential 2TB with P/N: WDBAAF0020HBK. My usb connector broke off. When trying to connect to PC holding the connector to the pins on the PCB Board it does not get recognized. In Device Manager there is a device with question mark and the message "Unknown usb device (device descriptor request failed)". When i click on it there is another error message "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (code 43)". I tried with connecting it directly to the PC motherboard, the drive was found(sort of) but it says 0GB in BIOS and Disk Managment. Does anybody have any advice?

In case if it physically in normal condition, via Sata it will be encrypted by the USB bridge controller

Yeah, I was reading about this problem, and encryption seems to be the culprit. It seems getting a identical board replacement is the only way to go. Does anyone knows of a sites where you can order the replacement boards? I looked on ebay and didn't find any. My board is: 4060-705059-001 Rev. A (on the board) and 4061-705059-001 Rev. AG (on the white sticker)

Also while searching for this problem, I saw at multiple places that if you cut one of the pins on the EEPROM chip, that disables encryption or something like that and hdd can be used and its readable again. Has anyone tried that?

If your HDD was indentified in system via SATA as 0 capacity with original Model namd and S/n , than you have issue with partition. And deactivating encryption let you format the drive and reuse it without access to old data.
In case if you see 0 capacity device with unknown model name, than you have bricked hdd. Just replace it or trash it.

If you disable encryption, then you will not have access to your data. Do you care about your data, or do you just wish to reuse the drive?

No idea, but even if that were true, your current data is still encrypted.

No idea, but even if that were true ...

If you invalidate the external EEPROM, most bridge ICs will identify themselves with their own factory PID/VID. They will also revert to their own internal firmware.

You need install specific driver for your external HDD. I had the same problem with my My Book Essential.

1) you need to replace broken USB connector
2) install this driver to restore the external hard drive without losing encrypted data

Try it :D

Sorry for the late reply. Data is not important, but if there's a way to access it i'm willing to try

Can't install the driver cause there is no drive found. I replaced the usb connector (didn't soldered it, just bought the connector and put the cable in it) and I get the same message in the device manager "Unknown usb device (device descriptor request failed)"

get a new USB connector and have it soldered on. It looks like an easy job that could go horribly wrong. Any electric repair shop should be able to put the USB connector back on, or put a new one on the PCB and your drive should work as normal.

I have put the disc in docking station and there is "External USB 3.0 SCSI Disk Device" entry in the Device Manager. Is this of any help?

If you connect that docking station without disc, you will get the same name in device manager, it is comming from usb-bridge controller. Try to test you hdd via sata. There is a chance it is already bricked.

I did tried connecting it directly to sata in the pc but it was not found(sort of), it says 0GB in BIOS and it isn't found in Disk Managment or Device Manager

The hdd isn’t working properly then, simple as that.

As it’s not even recognised in BIOS properly, then it’s not DIY.

Send to a DR pro, and NOT a regular PC store.

I remember this type of case.
When remove usb bridge card , drive gone 0gb capacity over Sata connection to comp. It was hard case. MRT also couldn't access fw area. I have solved another my book case after this. But not was like that.

Anyway. My solution as I remember first access to SA with disable 411 and writed patched mod 02 that have been send from MRT to me. Drive allowed SA. And cloned with decryption .
